How Do You Define Beautiful Design?
Have you noticed the trend of modern tech company websites using minimalist designs with flat, simplified icons and illustrations? There is a striking similarity among them. While the design aesthetic of Apple is widely known and applauded, it nonetheless has sparked a wave of brands trying to emulate that style. Acclaimed designers Stefan Sagmeister & Jessica Walsh set out to examine this trend in their new book "Beauty." More importantly, they explore the essence of beauty and the power of beautiful design.
Their book tackles questions like, should design be focused solely on a problem that a company is trying to solve? Or should design incorporate beauty as well? How do you define beauty? Their book includes all perspectives, from philosophers, sociologists, even data from Instagram. They make a compelling case that beautiful design does indeed help drive the bottom line (e.g. beautiful package design moves more product; a beautifully designed park attracts more foot traffic etc).
Beauty is subjective. But what do you think? How do you define beautiful design?
