Best wishes for 2015 from the BeWater Project!

As we start the new year and project partners are focussing on plans for the next phase of activity, we bring you a round-up of recent news and project views from the end of a very busy 2014. The Awareness Campaigns kicked off in each of the four Case Study River Basins, following the Consortium General Meeting, held in Cyprus in October. Also this edition we focus on WP6's Policy Review work.

Raising Awareness in the Regions

A challenge, but also an opportunity, of the BeWater Project is how to promote the adaptive water management approach for water basins. This involves integrating scientific thinking with sociological considerations to tackle the alarming global change projections pointing to increasing water scarcity and drought in the Mediterranean.

Reviewing Policy in BeWater

BeWater objectives include investigating existing strategic priorities and policies for river basin management around the Mediterranean. A first Policy Review has already taken place; Murray Biedler describes the background to the process, some intial analysis and an update on ongoing activities.

Stakeholder engagement, Water Management Option design and participative methodology were the hot topics for the BeWater General Meeting held in Nicosia, Cyprus, from 21-23 October 2014.

Upcoming Activities and Events

BeWater Steering Committee Meeting
Brussels, Belgium
4 - 6 February 2015

Members of the BeWater project Consortium will meet in Brussels to discuss progress and forthcoming plans in all work packages, with a particular focus on the potential collaboration with the World Youth Parliament and the development of Water Management Options in the four Case Study River Basins.

Murray Biedler was lead speaker at the panel session on “Civil society contribution to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals related to water” at the 2015 UN-Water Annual International Zaragoza Conference, “Water and Sustainable Development: From Vision to Action”. The conference took place from 15-17 January 2015.

A dialogue between Euro-Mediterranean projects aiming to enhance the water-energy-food nexus took place in Barcelona on 21 and 22 January 2015. The workshop was part of the Mediteranean, Science, Research and Innovation Gateway (MEDSPRING) project. Anabel Sanchez (CREAF) and Leonardo Piccinetti (EfB) attended from the BeWater consortium.

Pedieos partners were featured on Sigma TV talking about Climate Change and the BeWater project.

Tordera partners published a video of their first Stakeholder meeting in Sant Celoni.
