Best wishes to all for the festive season and for the new year 2017!

As we draw to the end of a year of intense activity in BeWater, we mark the shift into the final project phase with the launch of the outscaling campaign and a major push towards sharing the project approach,  experiences and outputs.

One of the key products and culmination of the long iterative process was the publication of River Basin Adaptation Plans for each of the Case Study River Basins; read on to hear how some progress has already been made towards their implementation. And following BeWater participation in COP22 and EFIMED Week, international events for the new year include the River Basin Adaptation Conference, European Policy Event and Concertation Workshop. Also, don’t miss the update on the fruitful collaboration with GWP-MED’s Youth Initiative in Tunisia.

Citizens join experts to develop River Basin Adaptation Plans 

Citizens from around the Mediterranean have participated in adaptation planning for the management of their local river basin in the light of global change. Based on a novel approach developed over the course of the EU-funded BeWater project, stakeholders from four Case Study River Basins were engaged in a collaborative process with experts and policy makers. The process has culminated in the drafting of four River Basin Adaptation Plans, aimed at fostering adaptation to climate change within the basins.

Sharing the BeWater experience with the international community at COP22

The BeWater approach and results have been presented at numerous international, European and Mediterranean conferences and workshops on water and adaptation, as on the recent United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change COP22 Conference in Marrakech, Morocco.

Building synergies to strengthen the Tunisian youth’s role in water resources management and climate change adaptation 

The Global Water Partnership – Mediterranean (GWP-Med) has been leading a synergy of great added value for strengthening the Tunisian youth’s role in advocacy and decision-making with regards to water resources management and climate change adaptation.

Closing act for BeWater’s involvement with the Tunisian youth 

BeWater recently concluded its involvement with the Tunisian youth in the Rmel River Basin and the Zaghouan Region. This was a youth initiative jointly developed with the Global Water Partnership’s “Youth for Water and Climate” since mid 2015, to raise the Tunisian youth’s voice with regards to water resources management and climate change adaptation, both at national and international level. A closing event was held for the youth initiative consisting of two successive workshops on 12 and 19 November 2016.

BeWater Concertation Workshop
Brussels, Belgium

The workshop “Lessons learnt from water projects of international cooperation and synchronisation with funding agencies” will be held on 30-31 January 2017 in Brussels, Belgium. The expected outcomes of the workshop will be a report summarising key challenges and conclusions to be dealt with at policy level to support instruments to international cooperation in climate change research.

The event will showcase the outcomes of participatory research projects and methodologies for assessing stakeholder interests, demands and concerns within the field of adaptive water resources management.

River Basin Adaptation Conference
Nova Gorica, Slovenia
7 - 8 March 2017

“Society as a key player in river basin adaptation for global change” will be the final conference of the BeWater project addressing the urgent need for adaptation plans to outline how individual river basins can prepare for the impacts of climate change. Last weeks to submit abstracts presentations. Due date is 9 January 2017.

The Cyprus Institute just published two scientific research papers on studies carried out on the Pedieos River in the context of the BeWater project.

The Institute for Water of the Republic of Slovenia will participate in the forthcoming LIFE project, ViVaCCAdapt – Adapting to the impacts of Climate Change in the Vipava Valley. The project started in July 2016 and will last for five years

Sihem Jebari from INRGREF (Tunisia) presented insights and results obtained in the Rmel Case Study River Basin, part of a round table focused on innovative and participatory approaches during EFIMED Week 2016.

The BeWater project is entering its final phase, with the launch of the BeWater project oustscaling campaign. Having worked for the past three years with local stakeholders in Pedieos, Tordera, Rmel and Vipava, it is now time to reach out to the wider community sharing the experiences obtained during the project.

Under the theme ‘The role of water in Adaptation to Climate Change’, the MEP Water Group organised a well-attended public session on the 6th of December at the European Parliament in Brussels. 
The next edition of the BeWater News is planned for July 2017. Contributions are welcome; please contact Albert Garduño at EFIMED.
