In Conversation with Prof. Jane Fisher – 13 Oct 2016
Life and other Catastrophes - Unlocking the impact of life on women’s health and wellbeing”

The eloquent Professor Jane Fisher, Director of the Jean Hailes Research Unit at the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University was our guest speaker at this popular event.
We were very fortunate to have this function sponsored by legal firm Hall and Wilcox, to help us promote MWF and spread the word about giving circles to their female colleagues and clients.

Professor Fisher’s walked us through the work of the Jean Hailes Research unit; their study of the enormous changes having a child brings to a contemporary woman’s life; and a recent project completed by her team, What were we thinking!.
This project features ‘good ideas for first time mothers and fathers’, and includes a face-to-face format, a website, blog and an app., to help address new parenting issues in plain language!

It was a great night meeting and networking with current and potential MWF members. Thank you to both Professor Fisher and Hall and Wilcox for a wonderful evening.
End of Year Celebration at the RBGV - 29 Nov 2016
The historic Gardens House at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, was the beautiful venue for our final event for the year. Members and friends gathered in the house’s rear garden for celebratory drinks and delicious canapes. For guests who hadn't experienced the ambience of this private event venue really enjoyed the special ambience of this unique place within the RBGV.
Various MWF committee members were able to speak throughout the evening: Cynthia Barnicoat was our entertaining and well informed MC . Kirsten Bartlett gave us an overview of MWF’s busy 2016 year. Georgia and Christina Theodoris enticed us all to buy raffle tickets which will go towards the cost of video taping our 2017 grant finalists.  Huge thanks to both Melissa Chen for donating her ‘master chef’ dinner skills as a raffle prize and to Caitriona Fay/Perpetual for donating a bottle of Penfold’s Grange as another fab prize!
MWF Member News
New Life Member!
We are very thrilled to announce that one of our members has changed her previous membership to a Life Membership by making a $25,000 donation. These funds are now held in MWF’s Endowment account at LMCF (named MWF Giving Account). This is the 2nd Life Membership that we have received since our launch and the income from such endowments will benefit our grant making .
New Members
BIG welcome to our newest members - Alex, Sue Ann, Karen, Kate and Natalie. Thank you all so much for joining Melbourne Women’s Fund and we look forward to getting to know you this year!

How can you help us grow? If you have a friend who is interested in joining and would like to meet with one of the Membership Committee for a chat about our giving circle, just let us know!

Membership Renewals
Members who joined in the first quarter of 2016 will be receiving their Membership Renewal emails this month. You can either complete the Membership Renewal Form that will be forwarded to you OR call Lonia Catalano at LMCF directly on 03 9633 0036 to organise over the phone.

Remember your renewal donation can be made annually or monthly - so you will be eligible to vote at our 3rd Annual Grant Awards event ‘Empowering Futures’ later in the year.
MWF’s USA meetings
We were invited by Amanda Ellis (a recent guest at Prof Jane Fisher event) to present a PPT about MWF at the East West Centre in Honolulu, when Gillian Hund was on her way to the US in December. She was also able to meet with The Women’s Fund of Hawaii, to talk about our member groups, great sharing!

Once in Seattle Gillian was also able to meet with Colleen Willoughby (our Founding Patron) and further learn from her experience about managing vibrant giving circles.  (NB: trip was not at MWF expense).
Grants Committe Update

The Grants Committee has completed the the first major stage of the MWF’s 2017 grants evaluation process: the Research and Discovery phase. This is when we explore the many worthwhile organisations operating in the metro Melbourne area and the projects they are pursuing.

With recommendations from MWF's membership, we had a considerably larger number to research and were very pleased to review 47 projects, a 135% increase over last year. All of these organisations and their projects covered the membership’s highest priority interest areas per last year’s survey, specifically childhood and adolescent education, family violence, homelessness, education of mothers, older women’s health and issues, family wellbeing and gender equality.

We have invited 13 of these projects to advance to the Expression of Interest (EOIs) stage. The committee will be meeting Friday, February 24th to review the EOIs and decide which 10 (five for the Significant grant, five for the Nurturing grant) to invite to submit a final, full application. The committee will then review these in April and choose the six big finalists!

Don't forget your new year's resolution: renew your membership or join MWF this financial year!
