40,000 want the ECI to be reformed. Will the Commission listen?

Dear Brussels friends,

Next Tuesday, the European Commission will present its working Programme for 2017.

We have done almost everything we can to ensure the Commission makes the ECI reform a priority. We pushed the European Parliament to adopt a resolution, and we launched a petition which 40,000 citizens have signed so far.

Yet, we are afraid this will not be enough.

The European Commission has been shockingly inactive in improving the ECI regulation in 2016. Therefore, we are very worried that once again the ECI will be ignored or very low-priority.

It is time for a last push. On Monday 24th November 2016, activists from The ECI Campaign,Democracy International, and Mehr Demokratie will hand over more than 40.000 signatures of the petition "Save the ECI now" to the EU Commission to make sure they are aware that so many people are expecting them to initiate reform of the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) rules.

Before we meet with Cabinet of Vice-President Frans Timmermans, you are all invited to join us in front of the Berlaymont building (next to Plc. Schuman) on Monday, 24 November 2016 at 10.30 am. We will do a short photo-shooting celebration.

The more people the better! Join the Facebook event for more details.

It would be shocking if the Commission does not include a reform of the ECI regulation in its plans for 2017. To make sure we do not lose one more year of inaction, please join us on Monday morning to make sure the Commission knows we are not giving up on them!

We look forward to seeing you on Monday 10:30 in front of the Berlaymont building!

EU Parliament resolution includes the ECI reform into the Commission's working program

Two weeks ago, the European Parliament voted on the EU Commission's Work Program for 2017. Thanks to our lobbying efforts, the resolution includes the following paragraph on the ECI:

“Asks the Commission to take initiatives with a view to strengthening the European institutions and encouraging EU citizens to be more involved in European political life (…) believes that stronger actions are also possible to inform EU citizens about their rights, exploit the potential of the European Citizens’ Initiative and strengthen the role of the EU Ombudsman.”
