Expansion of Technical Assurances for COVID-19 studies

Welcome to HRA Latest. This email contains important updates about health research during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As part of our response to the pandemic, we have changed how we operate to prioritise COVID-19 related research. We have also published guidance to support sponsors, sites and researchers during this time.

Through our fast track review process, studies are being approved in as little as 24 to 78 hours. To support the quick set up of COVID-19 studies, the Technical Assurance process has also been expanded

We’re working on a new section of our website about COVID-19 research which will be updated regularly. This will include guidance for researchers and sponsors, summaries of approved COVID-19 research studies and changes to our processes.
This is a difficult and unprecedented time for everyone, with many people under significant pressure. But this situation also highlights the hard work and dedication of everyone across the healthcare system.
I am immensely proud to be part of an organisation which is working alongside many others to tackle coronavirus.
We are extremely grateful to our Research Ethics Committees for reviewing COVID-19 related research and enabling us to fast-track the approval for these studies. On behalf of everyone at the HRA, I would like to say a huge thank you.

Prioritising study approval for COVID-19 research
We are working with the devolved administrations to fast-track applications for COVID-19 studies, so that they can set up as soon as possible.

To enable us to focus on this important activity, we are no longer accepting research applications from masters and undergraduate students. The NIHR has paused all new and existing studies supported through its Clinical Research Network to focus on COVID-19 research.

Guidance for sponsors, sites and researchers
We have published guidance to support health and social care research during the COVID-19 pandemic. The guidance relates to REC and NHS arrangements for new COVID-19 studies and amendments to existing studies.

Please check the guidance regularly to make sure you are working from the latest version. All guidance updates are also shared on the HRA Twitter account
Timelines for fast-track review during the pandemic
COVID-19 studies submitted for fast track review are currently being approved in as little as 24 to 78 hours. The timelines reflect the significant public health interest in studies to learn more about the spread of Coronavirus, or to test new treatments. If you are preparing a study for review, please read the latest update on our website.
Expansion of Technical Assurances for COVID-19 studies
To support sponsors and sites in the quick set up of COVID-19 studies, the Pharmacy and Radiation Assurance process has been expanded. If you are submitting a research project for COVID-19 that includes pharmacy or radiation read more about our fast-track review process and how to find out more.
