Connected by a Thread
Peruvian embassy hosts exhibit featuring indigenous culture

An exhibition highlighting one of the last indigenous cultures of the Peruvian Amazon and featuring field research, photography, art conservation and curatorial work by UD faculty, students and alumni opened recently in Washington, D.C. 

The Ese’Eja People of the Amazon: Connected by a Thread will be on view at the Embassy of Peru until Sept. 15, and will then travel to numerous museums throughout the U.S. A new documentary book, Ancestral Lands of the Ese’Eja: The True People, also has been published.

UD research team wins prestigious
$1 million Keck Foundation grant

Jennifer Biddle, a marine microbiologist at the University of Delaware, often wondered why microbes living deep in Earth’s crust look so similar to microbes up here at the surface, in forests and streams. What would it take these "locals" to adapt to a much slower lifestyle down in the depths?

With a prestigious $1 million grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation, Biddle and co-investigators Adam Marsh and Thomas Hanson, all faculty members in UD’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, will peer deep into the lives of microbes to find out how their genes get toggled off or on.

NIH Extends Effective Date of Single IRB Policy

NIH has extended the effective date of their single IRB policy to January 25, 2018. The policy will apply to all competing grant applications for due dates on or after January 25, 2018. For R&D contracts, the policy will apply to all solicitations issued on or after this effective date.

Retirement Announcement

Clara Simpers, research compliance coordinator, B.A., C.I.P., will retire on August 4 after 15 years of exemplary service to the University of Delaware. Since joining UD in 2002, Clara has held a variety of critical positions and roles. She has been with the Research Office Regulatory Affairs group for the past 10 years. We wish Clara a long and happy retirement!
