Hello again <<First Name>>!

We're excited to have you a part of the SMP family!

It's the beginning of yet another wonderful week at UC Merced. Have you had a chance to go to any of the numerous on-campus events? Did you find a club you'd like to be apart of during Club Fair? Maybe you've been hanging out with the new friends you've made? Whatever it may be, we hope you've found something fun to help you feel at home at UCM. If not, don't worry. There are still plenty of opportunities to come!

We are hard at work pairing all the mentees with mentors. So you should be contacted by your mentor soon if you haven't been already. Assuming you've filled out your mentor preference form, that is =). If not, be sure to do that as soon as possible as mentors are on a first come first serve basis. They're flying of the shelves so order now!

Steps to Prevent the "Freshmen 15"

Have you heard of the Freshmen 15? According to recent studies including from Rutgers University, 1 in 4 freshmen will gain 10-15 pounds their first semester. No worries! We are hear to remind you of the importance of remaining healthy while eating yummy food. Below we offer resources you can use to balance your meals while maintaining your budget and not have to sacrifice your favorite foods.

On-Campus

Maintaining a healthy diet on campus can be tough due the high availability of high calorie, unhealthy, but delicious choices. However, there are so many healthy options in each on campus dining station. Additionally, the University's new nutritionist Jennifer Hobbs has implemented new standards so that every meal in the Yablokoff-Wallace Dining Center (DC) is healthier. Check out the resources below!
  • Yablokoff-Wallace Dining Center (DC)
Each station provides a healthy option. For example, Blue Plate offers a vegetarian meal every day. Keep a lookout for the new Blue Plate schedule here! If you don't want to eat from the salad bar every day, you can try ordering a veggie burger or grilled chicken burger from the grill.
  • Lantern Cafe (KL)
The lantern offers a variety of healthy wraps and sandwiches. It also offers delicious baked goods and beverages. For healthier choices, try the oatmeal cookie or an unsweetened tea.
  • Diesel Dogs (Outside of KL)
Hotdogs are not the healthiest meals but if you find yourself craving one, try adding less toppings and condiments. Additionally, fight the urge to purchase the chips or churro as a side.
  • Marketplace/Marketplace Express (The Summits)
The marketplace offers so many options and can be your best friend on those late nights when the DC is closed. However, you don't have to binge on high calorie snacks, instead try the organic fruits and trail mixes.
  • Fork in the Road (Between SSB & SSM on Scholar's Lane)
The fork in the road trucks are super convenient when your on the way to class and want that quick snack. Try choosing a small snack such as a banana or oatmeal in a cup to keep you energized longer. A fall schedule will go up here soon.

Off-Campus

Maintaining healthy eating habits while living off campus can provide its own challenges as well. No need to fret, we still got you covered ! Living off campus demands setting up time to cook meals and since most of us either don't know how to cook or struggle finding time to cook, we tend to give into eating fast-food. However, with a few steps we can make sure to remain healthy while eating some delicious food.
  • Create a Monthly Budget
One of the most crucial steps in making sure we can even afford a nice healthy meal is budgeting. Take into account how much you need to eat a day, generally three meals and two snacks daily. This can range from 10-30$ a day depending on how much you eat. Click here for a budget calculator and here for more tips on budgeting.
  • Find Local Grocery Stores & Farmers Markets for Fresh Groceries
We are fortunate enough to live in the central valley which is surrounded by agriculture. This means we are close to organic and fresh produce. One popular farmers market occurs every Saturday at the Merced Flea Market. You can click here for directions! Another popular spot is Yang's Strawberry & Produce Stand open everyday! Directions located here. You can find many more by searching on the web.
  • Weekly Newsletters/Coupons
You can find these by searching online. Just search for your local grocer website and the weekly newsletter should be included. If you receive newspaper in the mail, there are typically coupons and weekly newsletter in them as well.
  • Plan Out Meals
You can also plan out your meals to save time. This can be done by cooking on weekends and freezing the meals in containers. While planning out meals try to include more veggies and less fried or fatty foods. For more information you can click here!
