<<First Name>>, SMP wants you to suceed!

Can you think of anyone else who is invested in your success as much as your mentor? Well yes, there are your parents, guardians, relatives, close friends, your teachers. . . OK so we're not exactly unique when it comes to supporting you BUT, we are very proud to be counted among that list of people that do support you. We take our positions as mentors seriously. We know you've invested some trust in us and we want to make sure we do everything we can to make sure you have every opportunity to achieve your goals and become successful. Be sure to let your mentor know how you're doing!

Healthy Living

Midterm Season is here! Don't panic! Here are some tips to keep you from feeling overwhelmed & stressed out.
Create a plan & take action
Write all of the things you need to do on a piece of paper or typed such as reading, finishing an assignment, going out with a friend, going to the gym ,etc. Then, prioritize your list so that you do the most immediate tasks first. This way you you can feel secure knowing what you have to do & can take steps to accomplishing each task. Click here for more guidelines & here for a free app you can download!
Determine what helps you relax
Everyone has something different that soothes them in stressful times. If you don't already know what helps you relax you can try a few common aids such as yoga, exercising, taking a 20 minute nap, or even listening to your favorite music. The importance is that you plan and take some time for yourself in between studying in order to prevent stress. For a list of tips to try and relax click here!

Remember to stay positive and reach out for help when in need. UC Merced has a great resource available for students called the Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) where trained staff can help you learn your own methods of handling stress. You can also reach out to your mentor for support & more information!

How Success Mentors Tackle Midterms

Midterms can be scary and intimidating but fear not! The Success Mentors are coming to your rescue! This week, two of our Success Mentors will share their very own study strategies and tips on how to prepare for midterms.
Name: Brian Reyna
Hometown: Los Angeles
Signature Animal: Owl
One word that describes you: Interesting

Where do you usually go to study?
"I always study on the 4th floor of the library with other members of the professional medical fraternity Phi Delta Epsilon because they always offer support and encouragement."
How many hours do you spend studying each day?
"I spend quite a few actually! I would say anywhere from 6-10 hours depending on how free my schedule is."
Any other tips?
"My biggest tip for anyone is to really understand themselves and know what type of environment they study best in because if you are not comfortable or effective in your studies, school will be that much harder."
Name: Eliana Vasquez
Hometown: Eagle Rock, CA
Signature Animal: Chimpanzee
One word that describes you: Vibrant

How early do you begin studying for a subject?
"I try to stay up-to-date with the information. I read every weekend to catchup on the material."
Do you form study groups?
"I form study groups when I know I'm prepared to teach others. That's the only way I find them beneficial."
Any other tips?
"I'd say to definitely ask professors and TAs as many questions as possible. That got me through many classes. Have fun!"
