<<First Name>>, Trick r Treat!

We're almost there! Halloween is this Friday and I bet you're just dying to put on your costume, wear it to your classes and run amok all day, aren't you? Ok maybe not, but I should let you know, the Halloween season at UCM is one of the most exciting. See below for some highlights.

But first, a word from our sponsor:
Halloween; it's that one night a year where we all feel like we can dress up however and in whatever we feel like right? Right!. . . BUT! But take a moment to consider your fellow Bobcats and the impact your costume will have on them. We are a diverse group of students; culturally, spiritually, morally. What may seem trivial to one, may be pretty impactful for another. So, when you're dawning your costume this Halloween, just remember, you can wear whatever you like, but it don't mean you get a "get out of jail free" card.
=] Happy Halloween, <<First Name>>.

Safety 101

(The Halloween Edition)

Celebrating Halloween in college can be exciting time of year for many. At this age, it’s not just Trick or Treating anymore, it's about the costume parties and the other festivities! To make sure that your good time stays a good time, follow these few suggestions:
  1. Trust your instincts-If you feel threatened, scared or insecure in a situation trust your gut. If something looks extra odd to you don't hesitate to contact local authorities.
  2. Avoid being alone with a vampire, witch or odd creature-It is always better to be around people you know and can trust, but if you are trying to meet new creatures make sure to let a friend know where you will be.
  3. Know your surroundings-Always do a quick run about the location making sure it is safe.Carry extra money just in case you need to howl (call) at a cab later. Most importantly make sure you have a charged phone.
  4. Watch over your potion(drink)-Goes without saying but make sure to watch your drink at ALL TIMES. When in doubt- pour it out.
  5. Wear reflective clothing-If you will be doing some trick or treating remember to wear clothes/costumes that will visible at night, especially in dark neighborhoods.
  6. Flashlight-It can get pretty dark in rural Merced so make sure to carry some lighting with you a small flashlight should do the job.

Spooky Stories

This halloween season, take a breather, and enjoy a couple of mentor created scary stories made especially for your reading pleasure.

The Haunted Barn

“Meredith wake up!” This was the second night in a row my roommate Felicia woke me up in the middle of the night. “Felicia, really? It’s one in the morning!” “C’mon lets go out, a bunch of us are going to explore that old barn on-campus!” . . . Click to continue reading.

The Field

I once knew this girl, Eliana. We both started out at UC Merced the same year. She disappeared 3 years ago. She didn’t even finish the first semester of her freshman year. I remember the first few weeks of school. We were tight, being from the same high school and all. . . click to continue reading.

I took a deep breath of the cool, fresh pine-scented air and looked out at Lake Yosemite. The partial moon reflected off the glassy water, and on the other side I could see the towering dam, going up several feet. Movement at the very top of the dam caught my eye. . .
