Thank you for signing up to receive my newsletter! It was great meeting many of you this past Winter and Spring in Florida, Arizona, Texas and New York. Thank you all for inviting me and being so kind and FUN! After each trip I feel as though I have made new friends.
Thank you again for trying my techniques, whether it was a fabric collage workshop (Happy Villages) or a topstitch piecing workshop (Accidental Landscapes, Random Roses, Layered Log Cabin or Wearable Waves), I think you all learned to be more playful with fabric. That’s my goal anyway!
Inspiration from South Africa
In March, my husband Walter and I spent 3 weeks in South Africa. It was a trip of a lifetime. We took a total of 2500 photos….inspiration was everywhere….from photo safaris (with more wild animals than I have ever seen) to sipping a glass of South African wine in the wine country. It was amazing!
Here are just a few shots which capture the flavor of the art, landscape and villages that intrigued me.
The outdoor Knysna Craft Center has many artists selling their work. Here’s a beautiful wooden bowl that I bought from this super saleswoman and artist
Colorful pottery, ancient San (Bushman) rock art, a close up of a hand embroidered “Kaross” – an initiative started over 25 years ago to enable South African women to make a living by being creative and expressing their unique cultural environment.
From the Indian ocean coastline to remote villages to dramatic peaks to green wine country, South Africa has a little of everything. Definitely inspiration for Accidental Landscapes!
The Bo Kaap section of Cape Town, is a brightly painted neighborhood. Can you guess that I was thinking Happy Villages the whole time!?
Sunshine & Shade Garden Ribbon
This quilt received an honorable mention ribbon at the American Quilter’s Society National quilt show in Paducah, Kentucky – April 20-23, 2016… and it is being considered for inclusion in the 2018 AQS Engagement calendar to be published April 2017.
This piece uses my layered topstitching technique to create the curves. The tiny triangles are raw edge collage. Some of them are made with metallic foil to add a little extra sparkle.
Wow, I’m going to have my own show at the Kent Memorial Library, Kent, Connecticut in September and October 2016. Exact dates and time of opening reception to follow in my next newsletter.
That’s the reason I decided to make a series of New England inspired villages and landscapes. Here is the first in the series, “New England Village” (23” x 27”) photo above
Yesterday I started the second in the series, another village, “Meet me at the Library,” (30” x 30”). I started with the Kent library in the center and am currently still adding buildings around it, based on the businesses we have in town. The placement of the buildings is not realistic, and most of the architectural details are very abstract, but obvious enough to be recognizable. More on this village and the future New England landscapes in the Summer newsletter!
The perfect time to visit Kent, Connecticut and New England is in the Fall. You can then become an official “Leaf Peeper.” If you haven’t visited Kent, it’s worth the visit….restaurants, art galleries, hiking along the Appalachian Trail, the Kent Falls State Park, covered bridges……and the great sidewalk book sale outside the library.
