The Motion Carries: JLLB Helps Key State Legislation Pass

Advocacy Update from JLLB Senior CalSPAC Delegate Christie Bettendorf:
As state legislators went to recess mid-way through a two-year bill cycle, 17 bills and three resolutions supported by the Junior Leagues of California State Public Affairs Committee (CalSPAC) were signed into law by the Governor this fall. Additionally, 24 bills and one resolution are sitting in committees with the potential to be signed into law next year.

Three bills and one resolution supported by the Junior League of Long Beach were also signed into law: AB 881, which extends punishment for cyberbullying to those who participate in it; SB 14, which prevents the use of a minor's sexual history in civil court cases; AB 1321, which provides additional money for CalFresh participants to purchase food at farmer's markets; SCR 34, which designates September as Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Two bills and a resolution supported by JLLB are still sitting in committees for next year.

Save the Date!

Big Culinary Player at JLLB Kids in the Kitchen Mini Event

More than 30 boys and girls learned healthy-eating cooking techniques from a professional chef at the Junior League of Long Beach’s Kids in the Kitchen Mini Event last month at the Boys & Girls Club on 1835 W Willard St. in Long Beach.

Chef Elizabeth Whitt, who has cooked at a number of JLLB mini events, is a Le Cordon Bleu Paris Grand Diplome-trained chef. She is also a culinary instructor, consultant and caterer. Chef Elizabeth said that one of the most rewarding parts of working with the kids is not only getting them to eat vegetables – including broccoli and mushrooms – but to actually like them! For more information about Chef Elizabeth’s services, please contact her at elizwhitt@gmail.com or www.chefelizabeth.com.

End-of-Year Tax Deductible Donation Opportunity

Your support means a lot to the Junior League of Long Beach! Since 1931, JLLB has been impacting the lives of children and families in Long Beach and surrounding communities. As an all-volunteer educational and charitable organization, JLLB's more than 400 women work together to promote programs which enhance the physical, emotional and intellectual health of children.

As we come to the close of 2015, we would like to provide this opportunity to make a tax deductible donation. While a donation of any size is always much appreciated, a suggested amount of $50+ can make a difference in the effectiveness of our efforts in the community. With your help, we can continue shaping the future of our community through the growth and enhancement of our programs.

The Junior League of Long Beach’s impact in the community:
  • The Especially Me! program offers an interactive curriculum for girls ages 9-12 who participate in discussions on the topics of self-esteem, body awareness, nutrition, bullying, goal setting and decision-making skills.
  • This year marks the 11th Annual Kids in the Kitchen, a free healthy eating and exercise fair for the entire family which attracts more than 1,500 attendees annually. We also host free mini events for community partners across the city throughout the year.
  • Our newest addition, Confidence & Me: A Toolkit for Empowering To-Be-Teens is a year-round character development and bullying prevention program for 5th to 8th grade boys and girls and their caregivers, hosted as four free half-day workshops throughout the year.
  • JLLB is a charter member of the Human Trafficking Task Force in the City of Long Beach, and has published a comprehensive Resource Guide to assist organizations, agencies, and individuals in the greater Long Beach area and Los Angeles County who are aiding survivors of human trafficking.
Your contribution can be made online.

The Confidence Post

The Junior League of Long Beach works towards its mission with the weekly blog, The Confidence Post, which is a Junior League-powered social media platform that launched last year to create an online community specifically designed for middle school-age children and their parents, along with educators and community leaders. Weekly blog posts focus on topics such as self-esteem, leadership, bullying prevention and character development.

Practice Makes Perfect – In a recent post, JLLB Community Impact Chair Jennifer Sears writes about day-to-day situations and challenges that come up and offers techniques to handle them: “Do you ever wonder ahead how you would handle a situation or challenge? Then how about making a plan, and most importantly, practicing it ahead of time…”
JLLB and the Long Beach Human Trafficking Task Force

Junior League of Long Beach members were front and center when the Long Beach Human Trafficking Task Force received the 2015 Human Dignity Award for Promoting Unity, Building Community and Celebrating Diversity last month. The award was presented by the City of Long Beach Human Dignity Program.

The Task Force was selected for this honor because of its unique role in the community as bridge builders and advocates against human trafficking through collaboration.

The award was issued at the Annual Gene Lenztner Human Relations Awards Celebration, sponsored by the California Conference for Equality and Justice (CCEJ) on Thursday, October 15 at Keesal, Young & Logan.

A number of the Task Force members were in attendance including JLLB President-Elect Virginia Zart, who is an active member of the group, and JLLB member Mary Hinds, who was instrumental in getting the Junior League of Long Beach involved in the organization.

Earlier this year, JLLB published a Resource Guide for Long Beach Area Service Providers to assist agencies and community-based organizations in aiding the survivors of human trafficking. The Guide was a collaborative effort with the Task Force and it can be accessed here.
