Focusing on Maravilla National High School,

a BKP supported school library.

Maravilla is one of the island towns of Lavezares, Northern Samar, and located southeast of Manila.  A good 16 hour car ride, then an hour boat ride, from the capital of the Philippines.  Teachers and students attending Maravilla National High School (MNHS) diligently take a small "bangka" (or paddleboat) to and from school daily.   MNHS was built 2 years ago as students were dropping out of school during the monsoon season.  A school that is more accessible was necessary, thus MCHS was built through government funding and donations.  The school has 3 classrooms with 40-55 students in a class.

The classrooms have half-walls, thatched roofs & electricity still lacking.  The school library where BKP supplied books are located is a small partition of one of the classrooms.

The town mayor has created the Lavezares Reading Core Group (LRCG) to support MNHS and other pilot schools for an English reading program model in all community schools.  John Snow, our BKP sponsor for this school, will interact with LRCG for the book needs of this school, as well as the other schools in this group.

Annual Fundraiser a Success!

Thank you for supporting our annual Dinner Dance last Oct 17!  We raised over $4000 to support our operations.  Co-directors Rowena Sy-Santos (top right) and Judi Babcock (2nd right) recognized two volunteers that evening, John Snow (top left) and Rosie Segil (2nd left) for their training efforts in Northern Samar this past summer.

For  more pictures of the evening's food and fun, visit out Facebook post. We even made it to the Lowell Sun!
