Devonshire Students Discuss Fair Trade

At Monday’s meeting, the Devonshire Fair Trade Club presented to the Board of Education. The club, which was started this year by fifth grade teachers Rachel Spenn and Katie Lemke, is made up of 16 students and focuses on creating an understanding of fair trade. Students play games, role play global issues, and explore resources to understand the economic and social justice implications of fair trade.

The students created their own PSA video for Devonshire, provided additional information for teachers to share with their classes, and requested to teach about fair trade at a PLT meeting.

"Fair trade is something students can naturally understand,” said Ms. Lemke. “The philosophy that artisans and farmers are receiving a fair pay for their work and have worker's rights makes sense to students. Throughout the process they become global thinkers who are critical consumers and empathetic to people around the world."
