Water Quality Tested at all District Schools

Throughout the summer, 488 samples from 244 water fixtures throughout the district were collected using the recommended process by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). Samples were collected from all drinking fountains and any locations where food may be prepared including classrooms, cafeterias, multipurpose rooms, and staff lounges at every school, and testing was conducted by environmental consultants Ramboll Environ.

Lead analysis results indicated all samples at all buildings met the safe drinking levels established by the USEPA with the exception of one sample from a storeroom sink at Friendship Junior High which showed a slightly elevated level. The storeroom faucet has been replaced and retested and now shows safe and acceptable levels.

Superintendent Fessler’s Contract Extended

The Board of Education approved a new 5-year contract for Dr. Art Fessler, Superintendent of Schools at CCSD59. The new contract extends Dr. Fessler’s contract an additional three years from the previous contract and now runs through June 30, 2021. The contract guarantees previously approved raises in the first two years and provides the board with the option of determining raise rates annually during the final three years of the contract.

Barbara Somogyi, CCSD59 Board President stated, “Although Dr. Fessler is only starting his fourth year in District 59, through his effort and leadership he has made enormous advances in moving our large and complex district in a new direction. This journey is difficult and far from complete. The Board of Education's approval of a new five year contract with Dr. Fessler extends the opportunity for District 59 to continue our collaborative relationship with staff to ensure all our students develop the skills they will need to be successful in their future. We look forward to sharing our continuing good news.”

Calendar Considerations for Next Year

CCSD59 is starting to create and discuss with the Board of Education the school calendar for the 2017-18 school year. District 214 recently approved their calendar for 17-18 which starts the school year one week earlier than the typical start of school. Traditionally, CCSD59 has aligned with the D214 calendar for the benefit of our families who have students in both districts.
