Along with teachers Mrs. Jessica Goczkowski and Mrs. Liz Greenberg, a group of eight third and fourth graders from Admiral Byrd presented their service learning project at the board meeting on January 9, 2017.
The project focus was to benefit sick children at St. Alexius Hospital who are confined to long hospital stays with limited access to fun activities. The students created craft kits which contained written directions and all the materials needed to make the craft. They developed their craft kits from start to finish, including determining what materials could be used, identifying various district outcomes incorporated into the process, recruiting volunteers, and creating work groups.
The Admiral Byrd School made over 300 craft kits for the children at St. Alexius Hospital to do and 400 get-well cards in both English and Spanish, which were delivered to the hospital over winter break.
The board approved student fees for the 2017-18 school year. Similar to the 2016-17 school year, there will be no charge for instructional materials for grades K-8. Junior high school extra-curricular participation fees will not change from last year. These fees are as follows:
$15: For cross country
$30: For basketball, cheerleading, spirit squad/pom pons, soccer, volleyball, and wrestling.
Typically developing preschool student fees will be $220/month for a four day, 2.5 hour school week. This represents a 2.8% increase from the 2016-17 school year.
