Dear Friends in Christ at Redeemer,
Yes, that’s Ericka Jones! She came by yesterday to record a podcast and liturgies for upcoming worship videos. Ericka has often stunned me with her “on point” answers to kinda typical pastor questions; I’m expecting one universe of possible answers and she gives me something that floors me for a moment and wakes me up to my limiting assumptions.
Example #1, from several years back:
What do you think we should state as the mission of this church?
To end homelessness in this neighborhood.
Example #2, from yesterday:
How do you sense God’s present in your life today?
In the smiles and kind words I give to others, any hope I can share, words of encouragement. It would be hugs, but I can’t do that right now!
Usually, when I ask a “God’s Presence” questions, I’m expecting to hear about something *outside* the person—a beautiful sunrise, a surprise visit from a friend, an unexpected blessing, a perceptible answer to prayer. But Ericka’s answer reminds us of another truth: God dwells within
us, always. So God is present in the ways we share what is godly with others—positivity, love, compassion, empathy, comfort. God is present within us, and when we outwardly demonstrate what is within us, God is present in the world. Wow.
I couldn’t wait to share that with you, though Ericka’s full podcast will be made available February 21st.
weekend, enjoy “Finding Love: A Faith Story” featuring Luann Blohm and Scott McIntosh, who share the story of how they met, and how faith binds them together through 18 years of marriage. A worship experience based on Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals will also be available on our website: www.redeemermilwaukee.org
. Sunday is not only Valentine’s Day, it’s Transfiguration Sunday—we retell and unpack that time when Jesus took a couple friends up a mountain and he was seen in a new light.
Next week, an opportunity for in-person holy moments at Redeemer:
