Pastor's Note

Dear Friends in Christ,

While I can’t claim that I take time for devotions *every* morning, I can say that every time I do, I’m better for it. I’d like to share the September 14 Devotion from Henri Nouwen’s Bread for the Journey: A Daybook of Wisdom and Faith (HarperCollins 1997):

Remaining Faithful

Many people live with the unconscious or conscious expectation that eventually things will get better; wars, hunger, poverty, oppression, and exploitation will vanish; and all people will live in harmony. Their lives and work are motivated by that expectation. When this does not happen in their lifetimes, they aree often disillusioned and experience themselves as failures.
But Jesus doesn’t support such an optimistic outlook. He foresees not only the destruction of his beloved city Jerusalem but also a world full of cruelty, violence, and conflict. For Jesus there is no happy ending in this world. The challenge of Jesus is not to solve all the world’s problems before the end of time but to remain faithful at any cost.

The arriving reign of God will not be the result of our efforts; but we may harmonize, as best we can, with its vision as we know it through the words and deeds of Jesus Christ.

Blessings to each of you, always,

Pastor Lisa

PS: I volunteered for the first time at our nearby neighborhood school, the Milwaukee Academy of Chinese Language.  I went for an hour on Wednesday and did one-on-one reading with a K5 student and a 1st grader. It was wonderful, and I urge anyone else with a little daytime free time to learn more about it and get connected. (See below).  This was my family’s first year in the past two decades with no one enrolled as a student, so I was very glad to get this “1st Day of School” experience.
