Cathedral Windows, formed with chocolate and multicolored marshmallows, are a favorite no-bake treat at Christmas time for the Hargett and Walters families. (Malea Hargett photo)

That's sweet

Nothing is better than a plate of Christmas treats that you waited all year to devour. The Arkansas Catholic staff loved working on this story gathering cookie decorating tips and family favorite recipes for Christmas sweets from five Catholic women in the diocese. Let us know if you make one of these recipes and if you loved it.

You know the famous children’s book “Twas the night before Christmas”? What is awesome about being Christian is that we celebrate the Octave (eight days) before Christmas by meditating on the O Antiphons, one for each day leading up to Christmas. These antiphons praise God and pour hope into the human heart.

Reflection: Starting Dec. 17, take a few minutes to meditate on the O Antiphons. How is God revealing himself to you and filling you with hope?

St. Thomas Becket

December 29

Thomas studied canon law abroad and was ordained a deacon and later archbishop of Canterbury. He and King Henry II clashed over many issues. The king's wish to be rid of this troublesome prelate led to Thomas’ murder.

Jobless before Christmas

I lost my job a few days ago. Do you have any advice for how we should handle things during the Christmas season and until I’m working again?

The first thing to do is ...

Support retired priests

Eighteen retired, senior and infirm priests will be the beneficiaries of this year's Christmas collection at all Masses Dec. 24-25.  All funds are deposited into the Clergy Welfare Fund for their care.

21: First day of winter
24-25: Christmas holiday, diocesan offices closed
Many events in the diocese have been changed or canceled

"Do not be ashamed to pray, 'Lord, I need this. Lord, I am in difficulty. Help me!'" Such prayers are "the cry, the cry of the heart to God who is the father."

— Pope Francis, Dec. 9
