(Answer at the bottom)

JUST ONE MINUTE

I recently watched the movie "Pinocchio." He was instructed that if wanted to become real he had to be brave, honest and unselfish. These virtues are true for us all if we would like to become real and overcome the insincerity of maintaining appearances.

  • Be brave: The cardinal virtue of fortitude (brave, courage) empowers the person to withstand and overcome difficulties that block his/her goal of eternal life, holiness of life and daily love.
  • Be honest: Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount in teaching about speech says, "Let your 'yes' mean yes and your 'no' mean no." He is calling us to honesty and deep sincerity. The letter of James chapter 3 has a powerful section on curbing the tongue that includes “... do not boast and be false to the truth.”
  • Be unselfish: Charity (Christian love) is defined by selflessness, by being a gift of self to another, by willing the good of the other, by self-sacrifice. To see Christian love all we have to do is look at a Jesus crucified.
Reflection: Take some time today to visit with the Lord about how you are doing at becoming real and growing in the Christian virtues of fortitude, honesty and charity. Celebrate where you are thriving and cooperating with God’s grace. Ask for mercy and the strength of Jesus where you are struggling. In Christ Jesus.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux

Oct. 1

Left motherless at 4, she followed two older sisters into the Carmelites, entering at 15 as Sister Therese of the Infant Jesus. Poor health made her dream of missionary work impossible. In 1896 she contracted tuberculosis and died after months of suffering. Posthumous publication of her autobiography, "The Story of a Soul," (paid link) prompted popular devotion. The "Little Flower" is remembered for her "little way" of seeking perfection in the ordinary with a simple but total trust in God.

DAVE SAYS

Do I need life insurance?

My husband and I are debt-free. We are in our mid-20s, we also have a full emergency fund and we each have 401(k) plans with our employers. Currently, we are looking at life insurance. We do not plan on having children, so what length term policies would you suggest for a couple in our situation?
My recommendation is...

QUOTE UNQUOTE

"If we worship ourselves, we die, asphyxiated inside our tiny ego; if we worship the riches of this world, they take possession of us and enslave us; if we worship the god of appearance and are inebriated in wastefulness, sooner or later life is going to ask us (to pay) the bill."

-- Pope Francis Sept. 25
