Breaking free

Do you have beliefs about yourself that are holding you back? Read this story about Ruby Varela. Ruby battled depression after a car wreck left her a paraplegic. Instead of accepting she would always be confined to a wheelchair, she changed her attitude and leaned more on God to help her reach a big goal on her wedding day.

“I am the living bread ... My flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.” (John 6: 51 and 55) Here Jesus speaks clearly of the gift of his body, blood, soul and divinity in the Eucharist. St. Augustine, in speaking on the ineffable gift of the Eucharist, says, “God in his omnipotence could not give more, in his wisdom he knew not how to give more, in his riches he had not more to give, than the Eucharist.”

Reflection: I invite you to fully participate in Mass this weekend. Allow yourself and your family to receive the gift of God himself in the Eucharist.

St. Christina the Astonishing

July 24

During her own funeral Mass, Christina sat up then flew to the top of the church, later saying she had been to hell, purgatory and heaven, and was allowed to return to earth to pray for suffering souls. She is a patron saint of mental health workers and people with mental illness.
Pious or possessed?

Investment or payoff?

I have about $50,000 in student loan debt, but I also have $25,000 in savings, along with an E-Trade account with two single stocks that was given to me a couple of years ago. Those stocks are now worth about $13,000 combined. Should I sell the stocks to help pay off debt, or put the money from their sale into mutual funds?
Guess what Dave says?

We are hiring

Arkansas Catholic seeks two new staff members to help the diocesan newspaper reach more people. We need a full-time business manager and part-time digital media specialist. Do you know anyone who has these skills and wants to work with enthusiastic people, in a prayerful environment, on the beautiful grounds of St. John Center?

"Think about it: what is our vocation today, at our age? To preserve our roots, to pass on the faith to the young and to care for the little ones. Never forget this."

— Pope Francis, about the Church's July 25 first celebration of World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly
