“Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven.”

Living in a Christian congregation is no piece of cake, and it never was. A shared life of faith, requires effort and intentionality. Matthew speaks of the “little ones,” they are the ones the more “mature” members of the congregation think of as insignificant. Jesus says such seemingly insignificant members are to be valued and taken seriously because they are well regarded by the angels in heaven. Matthew also mentions those who have “gone astray,” or who have dropped out for so many reasons, error, loss of faith or simple indifference. Jesus directs us all to pastoral care to restore such persons to active participation in our community. In a culture of “nones” and “dones” and “spiritual but not religious” inclination, such restoration to participation is an important responsibility. Attention must be paid, and effort must be made.

The church is in a constant state of reformation and restoration, and all the baptized are called to be responsible for the participation and life of the congregation. Throughout history the life of a congregation is marked by tension, dispute, and fracture. We may be the Body of Christ, but the body is made up of fragile human beings, therefore, the health of each worshiping body requires deep investment for the sake of the well-being of the body. This is indeed no piece of cake, but it is the way to our real life of faith, hope and joy during this ‘life picnic.’

See you at church,

Pastor Tim Mason
