Devotion

Floods in East Honolulu, Volcanos on the Big Island, and then today I read sinkholes on the White House lawn! Talk about a time to listen to the Good News of Jesus! Do you realize the “New” Commandments given to us by Jesus, weren’t all that, ‘new?’ It is one commandment that is quoted from the old Torah of Judaism. It is the commandment that binds the followers to the leader, the disciples to the master. Over long generations the church has picked up many other ‘assignments and chores,’ many of which detract from this simple directive to love God and neighbor. That simple commandment, moreover, constitutes a total redefinition of “religion.” It turns out that faith, in this new ‘Jesus movement,’ has nothing “religious” about it, so that the character, purpose, and presence of God are redefined by love of sister and brother, eventually neighbor. Pentecost is a good time for the church to slough off much in the church that is a distraction from that single mandate. In the Gospel reading,

“Jesus, who gives a command and the capacity to obey it, we thank you for our peculiar assignment in the world. Grant that this day we may know joy in obedience to your single commandment. In your precious name. Amen.”

See you at worship! Bring a friend!
