15 years ago, on 29 March 2004 in Washington, Latvia together with other aspirant countries submitted its instruments of accession to NATO thereby officially joining the Alliance. Today, Latvia is one of 7 founders and the host nation of NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence, and "The Riga StratCom Dialogue" has become a must-attend event on strategic communications in Europe, if not the whole NATO. Ceremonies were held across Latvia on March 25 in memory of the thousands of people deported to Siberia by occupying Soviet forces in 1949. 42,000 Latvians were hauled off in cattle trucks 70 years ago and the date is now designated as Communist Genocide Memorial Day. More
