Good Results, No Medals yet at 2016 Olympics

The Summer Olympics are being held in Rio de Janeiro from August 5-21. Latvia is represented by 34 athletes who are competing in 13 different disciplines. The first week was successful for female athletes from Latvia who demonstrated good results, but did not win any medals. This week we hope to see good results and maybe a medal in BMX racing, canoeing and the javelin! #LatvijaRIO

Latvian Institute Discusses #IWantYouBack Initiative with Editors, Columnists

The Latvian Institute organised a roundtable discussion today for editors and columnists to talk about the #IWantYouBack social movement, thus initiating many discussions about the strategy, goals and next steps to be taken.

The Results of "Midsummer Video Story Hunt"

Before the Summer Solstice the Latvian Institute in cooperation with announced "Midsummer story hunt" and encouraged everyone, who feels Latvian at heart, to capture and share a short 2-minute Summer Solstice video, containing a Latvian tradition. The jury chose to award Artūrs Lūriņš and Jānis Katlaps who made emotional video story showing the festive atmosphere when friends come together and prepare for the Jāņi celebration. Increasing Options for Vegans in Rīga

Latvians are proud of their ancient cultural heritage when it comes to gastronomy, often producing and preparing their own food. Rīga and the Gauja region have been named the European Region of Gastronomy 2017 for that reason.

When drafting the state budget for the next year, efficient use of budgetary funds must be ensured so that necessary reforms in public administration would be continued, according to President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis.

Audio-Technology Company Becomes One of Latvia’s Most Popular Start-ups

The Latvian audio-technology company Sonarworks has found EUR 700,000 in its third round of investments, thus becoming one of Latvia’s most popular start-ups in the eyes of investors. Total investments at the company have already reached EUR 1.5 million.


An International Design Competition for Rail Baltica

The European Railroad Lines, Ltd, company, which is handling the first stage of the Rail Baltica project in Latvia, has just announced an international sketch design competition, “An idea for the construction of the Rail Baltica railway bridge and complex development of the central multimodal public transport hub in Rīga.”

Industrial Production Output is Growing

Data compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that, compared to June 2015, industrial production output increased by 7.9% in June 2016 (according to calendar adjusted data at constant prices). Production output in manufacturing rose by 8.2%, in electricity and gas supply by 9.6%, while in mining and quarrying there was a drop of 3.2%.


Baltics' Oldest Synagogue Reopen in Ludza

The Great Synagogue of Ludza in Latvia's east is a unique Jewish heritage site. The wooden building is at least 200 years old and is to be unveiled following a restoration lasting over a year, reported Latvian Radio Thursday.

Latvia’s gastronomy may have been influenced by Germans, Swedes, Poles and Russians, but if we look at national celebrations, then we see one very unique aspect of the past that is still with us – Latvians like to be in contact with nature and to produce and prepare food with their own hands. 

Latvia Ranks Third in Post-communist Democracy Index

Latvia ranks as the third-freest country among former states of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, according to the latest Nations In Transit report by the US-based human rights organization, Freedom House.
