The Montessori Way to Help People With Dementia

Making Daily Interactions More Meaningful

While there are ten Montessori Principles that are the cornerstone of the Montessori Methods for Dementia that we teach, the first three can be applied by everyone to almost every interaction with people with dementia, every day. It takes no extra time, just a little thought. By thinking about and using these principles every time we interact, we can add meaning and satisfaction to the person’s day and improve their quality of life.

So what are these principles?

Donna participated in a panel discussion titled “Engaging in Meaningful Activities”, which is, of course, the whole concept behind the Montessori Methods that we teach.

To help participants gain a better understanding of how simple activities can be used to engage people any time they could benefit from it, we created and donated sets of activities for each table. Donna explained how the activities could be kept at hand and how to present them quickly and easily.

It was heartening to see the number of people who came by our booth after the presentation to say how the discussion gave them some great ideas about how to better engage residents and how they could use activities such as the ones we gave away to help people everyday.

The Importance of Knowing the Person

This past Remembrance Day, the importance of knowing the person was made dramatically clear to me.

I visited a long term care home to help out. I gathered a small group of residents and spent about 45 minutes doing Remembrance Day activities such as reading “In Flanders Field”, colouring poppies, reminiscing about going to the cenotaph and Remembrance Days past. Everyone in the group had a nice time and participated in the activities.

New Product Videos

Curious to see how to use an activity? We are developing a series of videos showing our activities in use. Right now you can see the Tangram, our unique Sequenced Puzzles and the magic of Aquapaint. More coming every day.
