Charlene's Bubble

These acronyms might be unfamiliar to some of you, but those of us in WBII are familiar with both ‘International Women’s Day’ and ‘Start Your Own Business’ seminars. We easily namedrop them, and they are both in our news.

IWD is celebrated on March 8, and the theme this year is #BalanceforBetter. We hope that your will celebrate this special day! There are many activities going on in the community, and the theme maintains that:

‘Balance is not a women's issue, it's a business issue. Gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive.’
Gender balance is also included in the number 5 goal of the UN sustainable Development Goals, and the WBII is proud to be an organization that has long been supporting this goal by guiding women entrepreneurs, a group that has been traditionally fewer in number.

The other acronym – SYOB, for ‘Start Your Own Business’ seminars - represents one specific way that the WBII actively supports gender balance.
On Thursday, May 9, we will again be offering our SYOB seminar under a familiar format but with a new partner. For the past 4 years, the WBII has organized and offered SYOB Seminars in English to men and women in the international community in The Hague. During these seminars, we present the legal, financial, and procedural aspects of starting a one-person company, and do a reality check to discuss the viability of one’s business idea. We also discuss the importance of networking ‘Dutch’ style.
We took on this project in 2015 during the reorganization of the Dutch Chamber of Commerce, when they made the decision to stop offering English-language starters’ training.  At that time, WBII believed that these seminars were crucial to supporting the many expats who were trying to find employment in the region and considering starting their own businesses, but did not have enough detailed knowledge on how to proceed.  We believed also in the fundamental idea that it is in the best interests of our community at large that internationals should be able to start a business and contribute to our society, and the WBII volunteered to take this project on.
After 4-years running the seminars on a volunteer basis, we also wanted to ensure that programmes continued to be available in the longer-term, and looked for partners to help us safeguard their sustainability. Following discussions with a number of organisations in and around The Hague, the WBII Board have decided to collaborate with the Business & Management Department of the Leiden campus of Webster University. Based in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, Webster University is over 100 years old, and is one of the first educational institutions to internationalize their study programs. They have been actively involved in delivering quality educational programmes to internationals in Leiden for nearly 40 years, and were among the first to offer an English-language MBA. Their interest and experience in entrepreneurship education is a perfect match for WBII. Together, we will offer at least two ‘Start Your Own Business Seminars’ per year. Webster business students will gain valuable experience assisting with the organization and project management, and will ensure that the project is passed on from year to year. We are also in touch with other organisations that may participate, and their support will help us to continue to deliver high quality programs at reasonable costs. More to follow about this new development.
Celebrate IWD and our new SYOB partnership!
The partnership with Webster gives our ‘Start Your Own Business’ programme the gravitas it deserves, and we are thrilled that we can continue to offer these seminars to the international community on a long-term basis, and with an outstanding partner.

Thank you to Webster for joining us on this journey! And Happy International Women’s Day!

Top Tips

A new feature of WISE, Top Tips is where you can share your own best business practices with the WISE readership.

Not meant to promote your own business, Top Tips are general business-related tips that you have found useful. So if you know of handy websites or apps that help you run your business, or have found a new tool to help calculate your tax, let us all know.

Send your Top Tip to and I'll include it in the next WISE.

Top Tip - tax 'middeling'

And to kick off the feature, we have a Top Tip by  Nira Satguru on tax 'middelinig'.

If you have a higher tax rate one year followed by a lower tax rate the following two years, you can apply for a tax refund in the fourth year.

NB - you have to apply for 'Middeling', it is not automatic. It is calculated by averaging the three years income and calculating the tax refund due. Well worth bearing in mind for zzp'ers.

Get all the details from the tax office website.

WISE words

The following is a report from a breakfast session on 'Challenges for female entrepreneurs' hosted by MEP Maria Grapini on 7 March.

Thank you very much for your interest and participation in the breakfast discussion on “Challenges for female entrepreneurs”, kindly hosted by Maria Grapini MEP on Thursday, 7th March on the occasion of the International Women’s Day. The event, organised by METRO AG in cooperation with SME Connect and DIGITALEUROPE, focused on the challenges facing female entrepreneurs when they decide to start their own business.
In her welcome speech, Ms Grapini highlighted the crucial role that education and mentorship play to encourage women to start a company. The debate was moderated by Veronika Pountcheva, Global Director for Corporate Social Responsibility at METRO AG, who presented the results of the METRO International Own Business Study on Female Entrepreneurship. Read the main findings of the global survey.

During the event, we also had the chance to hear the personal experiences of two entrepreneurs: Srita Heide, CEO and founder of “Srita Heide International” and Margaux Poncelet, owner and founder of the Restaurant Origine in Brussels. Further, Helena Lovegrove, Director of Operations and Projects at DIGITALEUROPE, presented the project Women4IT, which aims at improving the digital competences of young women who are at risk of exclusion from the labour market.
