Message from the editor

Spring really is in the air now and I for one am feeling more energetic and keen to take on new projects. WBII too is blooming with new ideas and setting up new cooperation projects. In her 'Bubble', Charlene introduces us to a couple of the exciting new projects WBII is working on.

We have also joined forces with Webster University to organise the Start Your Own Business (SYOB) workshop - 3 seminars for internationals (both women and men) who want to set up business in the Netherlands. The next SYOB is on 9 May and costs just 25 euros for all three seminars. Don't miss out on this great opportunity to find out what it takes to set up a business in the Netherlands. Registration is now open.

AGM & annual report
Preceding the start of the monthly network event (which Nancy Mayer kindly reviewed, see below), we held our Annual General Meeting. Charlene Lambert, WBII Interim President, presented the WBII annual report for 2018 - 'Sharpening our Focus'. The report describes the rather tumultuous year of 2018, highlighting the changes the WBII Board and members introduced so that our organisation could not only keep going, but also develop as an organisation that is relevant and important to female entrepreneurs - both the young and the more 'seasoned' (as Charlene so charmingly puts it in her letter to members).

Even a cursory glance through the annual report makes it clear that as an organisation we achieved a lot in 2018, participating in many local and national events, providing training and mentoring, getting our own house in order, and generally being a source of information and inspiration to our stakeholders.

Well worth a read, you can find the 2018 annual report - Sharpening our Focus' - on the WBII website.

Member highlight

March's 10-minute member highlight took a little longer than 10 minutes but was no less interesting for that: a short presentation by Ebere Akadiri who created and ran the recent Rise and Lead Women conference.

Ebere introduced the new Mentoring Circles which will be hosted at the WBII office on 16 May, 4 July, 10 October and 14 November.

In Nancy's write-up of this presentation you will find all the details about this exciting new initiative.

Spring Renewal

Springtime is traditionally the ideal season for feeling more energetic, getting outdoors after the long winter, and catching up with friends. It’s also the perfect time for house cleaning, and our offices at Nassauplein 20 have not been overlooked!

New office setup

For some time now, we have wanted to make better use of our space, and we are appreciative of our volunteers who are helping us through our dynamic office makeover process!  With the excellent project management, and thorough decluttering, organized by Dymphna Elsink (Jouw Assistent), office design expertly developed by Darina Veen (Feng Shui Design), a fresh new coat of paint by Lisa Hall (Lemonberry), and a new meeting table and chairs, our sparkling ‘new’ office will soon be available to our members for meetings to help us to get together more easily.

New Mentoring Circles programme
Figuratively speaking, another type of house cleaning that the WBII is working on is to ‘clear away the cobwebs’ around the topic of how to ensure business success, and our new meeting space is a key piece of the puzzle.

In collaboration with our own amazing member and friend Ebere Akadiri (Rise & Lead), we will hold 4 Mentoring Circle meetings in our new meeting room for our members throughout 2019. These meetings are organized in the “Women and Business Success Series” presented by Rise and Lead Women, in partnership with the Women’s Business Initiative International. This Series is a part of the Rise and Lead Mentoring Circle programme focused on business development skills, training, and mastermind mentorship for women entrepreneurs who are ready to grow their small businesses.

The meetings will assist participants to uncover their blocks, create a growth plan, develop an investor ready-business model, and learn the relevant skills required to thrive in business. These circles will support our members in developing their own confidence and skills, and we are so pleased to partner with Ebere and Rise & Lead on this initiative.

More information and registration are to be found on the WBII website.

New partnership between WBII and THIC

Finally, the City of The Hague, through the Haagse Brug, has long been a friend of WBII, and we are also thrilled to announce our new formalized partnership just signed in March with The Hague International Centre (THIC), the new point of contact for international staff in The Hague region. This formalised collaboration is possible thanks to our registered non-profit status.

The City has recently expanded its programme to assist internationals living in The Hague and region, and WBII has registered with THIC and been accepted as a ‘trusted partner’ organization. Through this programme, THIC refers internationals to reliable, internationally-minded service providers such as the WBII.

Information about the WBII will be available in their City Hall offices and on their new website, and THIC’s new logo is also now on our website as a WBII partner.  We will also be participating in their CONNECT events, where new internationals will have an opportunity to meet with us and learn firsthand how the services of WBII and our members can help them to get settled into our community.

Spring renewal is an amazing process from many points of view - especially in the flowering fields of Holland - and we hope that you will also be getting outdoors and together with friends, and enjoying and benefiting from this wonderful time of the year!

          WISE words

Being an entrepreneur and running a one-woman business can be a lonely existence. That's why network associations such as ours are such an important resource for many women. As part of a larger organisation we all become more visible as was evidenced once again a couple of weeks ago when the Board received a request from the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia.

Raden Ayu KartiniMonica Wijayanti, First Secretary for Economy at the Embassy in The Hague, approached us for a speaker for an event the Embassy is organising on women entrepreneurship on 24 April 2019 in Kasteel de Wittenburg in Wassenaar.

The event is being held in the context of International Women's Day and the commemoration in April of Kartini, an Indonesian national hero who fought for women's emancipation and a right to formal education more than a century ago.

The Embassy was looking for an inspiring speaker to talk about doing business in the Netherlands.

How could we refuse? This is surely what WBII is all about! Sinead Hewson, has agreed to speak at this event, inspiring the audience of women associations from diplomatic corps, counterparts from Ministries and other institutions from the Netherlands, and students on setting up and managing your own business in the Netherlands.
