ExPO-r-Net will still be up and running, and project partners will have the opportunity to finalize all the different preparatory work in the coming months, discussing them at the next ExPO-r-Net biannual ExeCom Meeting on 30-31 March 2017 in Padua (Italy).

Successful 1st Phase of the ERN Application Process & Next Steps

ExPO-r-Net has received a very good news from the European Commission: our ERN for childhood cancers has successfully passed the eligibility check, namely the first step of the EU evaluation. Both the ERN application and the ERN members have been considered eligible by the Commission, as established in Commission Implementing Decision 2014/287/EU.

Following the first call for interest to establish a European Reference Network (ERN) and the call for grants for ERN, which closed on July 22nd 2016, the European Commission has received a total of 24 applications, involving 370 hospitals and nearly 1000 highly specialised units.

The next phase of the assessment will be carried out by the Independent Assessment Body (IAB) contracted by DG SANTE. IAB has already started its work to assess the ERN proposals, with the aim of delivering the final technical report by November 2016.

The final decision on the approval of ERNs will then be taken by the ERN Board of Member States (BoMS) towards the end of the year; the BoMS met on September 26th to discuss the next steps on the ERN proposals assessments, as well as some strategic issues. Finally, the approved ERNs are expected to be launched in early 2017.

Introducing Melanie Brunhofer

Melanie Brunhofer recently joined the Children´s Cancer Research Institute (CCRI) in Vienna as the Project Manager responsible for the ERN application process. She is replacing Barbara Brunmair, currently on maternity leave. Together with Professor Ruth Ladenstein, she will be in charge of the PaedCan-ERN, upon its desired approval and most likely for the ExPO-r-Net project at a later stage. Before, she was working in the `Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy` (PACT) in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. Melanie holds a Master in Science in Global Health from the University of Maastricht and a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Vienna.

Welcome Melanie, we look forward to work with you!

ExPO-r-Net profiled

Project competing for Gastein Health Forum award

ExPO-r-Net has been shortlisted for the European Health Award 2016. Although not having reached the winning position, ExPO-r-NeT scored very well in the evaluation, ending up among the only six shortlisted projects for this prestigious award. ExPO-r-Net has been thus presented at the Opening Plenary of the Gastein Health Forum 2016 and it also featured on the European Health Forum Gastein website and press release.

This is a very rewarding result for this 3-year project building a pilot European Reference Network (ERN) for Paediatric Oncology. In the past years ExPO-r-Net partners managed to consolidate a large multinational network of European hospitals and institutions, with the ambitious aim is to reduce inequalities in childhood cancer survival by providing high-quality, accessible and cost-effective healthcare for children with cancer across Europe.
