Edition 23

Hi All

Another month down and we are heading for half way through 2016. Where has the year gone?? Winter solstice is coming up on 21 June which is just over three weeks away. The days will start to get longer and we will get more daylight riding time in.

Are you a member of our Facebook page and do you visit our website?  These are the best places to get the most up to date information on our Club and activities.  Visit https://www.facebook.com/groups/north.harbour.ulysses/ and join or visit www.ulyssesnorthharbour.org.nz/ . You can also see what fellow members get up to on their rides and take part in Peter Webb's weekly "Caption This" competition.

Last month's Mystery North Harbour Ulyssian was guessed by Tracy Unstead. Tracy correctly guessed Laura Nankivell as the child going for her first motorbike ride with her dad.

Do you run your own business?  Make sure your fellow club members know what you do and get some free advertising in this newsletter.  Send me an ad and I'll include it every month.

Also check out my tips and tricks section that I'll be running every month. Email me if you have something that you think our members should know about.

Send me your stories, pictures, comments and feedback to me by clicking this link NH Editor

Enjoy our June newsletter

Our branch is going well with our membership up over 200 again, best of all we are attracting some younger members (under 50) but for the health of the Club and our Branch we need more young members. If you meet riders over 40 who are not Club members and they live in the North Harbour area introduce them to the club/branch. We have branch business cards available with website & contact details for you to hand out. (see Wayne or Dale) of course if they live on the other side point them towards the Auckland Branch website.

I believe our branch has a good variety of rides, social events and weekends away however we can always do with more ideas so if you have a favourite destination for a day ride or weekend away or if you are happy to take a ride contact Niki on Runs Email or talk to a Runs Committee/R.I.C person. If you haven’t filled in Niki’s survey do it now, your answers help us improve the branch.

OK! I picked the wrong date for our Mother’s Day Poker Run, however we ended up with 33 bikes and 48 poker hands. Highest hand went to Joy Zaloum, 2nd was Terri and 3rd was Bill Lowman. Thanks to John Heebink for a very interesting well organised ride. Keep an eye out for John’s version of Twists & Turns coming shortly which will help you with slow manoeuvre bike handling.

Our Mid Month dinners at the Africa Bar are attracting 40- 45 members and partners, the food is very tasty and good value, the V.I.P. card gives you a discount and a small bonus to the Branch, the only complaint I’ve heard is that the meals are a bit large, yes! having cubicles can be awkward but when the warmer weather arrives we can sit outside in a better group situation.  V.I.P Cards are available on dinner night or club night from me or ph/txt  027 289-1018, these cards can be used at any time.

Invitations for our SUNDAY JULY 10th SOCIAL BBQ are on the website or at club night, cost is only $12.50 per person and every-one is welcome the more the merrier. We need to have numbers by 4th July for catering purposes so don’t hang around REGISTER NOW. The music will continue on until 5.00pm.

Keep an eye out for a weekend away to Stratford in October and Andy Kelly is looking into arranging a Saturday dance night at the Africa Bar later in the year.

Don’t forget! the newsletter is your news, if you don’t send items, ride reviews and photos there won’t be an interesting newsletter. Send items to nh.editor.ulysses@gmail.com

Remember!!  We must support our sponsors so they can support us.

Wearing Your Jacket Backwards!
Two guys were roaring down the road on a motorcycle when the driver slowed up and pulled over. His leather jacket had a broken zip and he told his friend, "I can't drive anymore with the air hitting me in the chest like that." "Just put the jacket on backwards." His friend advised. They continued down the road but around the next bend, they lost control and wiped out. A nearby farmer came upon the accident and ran to call the police. They asked him, "Are they showing any signs of life?" "Well," the farmer explained, "the driver was until I turned his head around the right way!"

Seven guys had a marvelous day out today. Sig led us via the backroads in the Hunua ranges to Thames where we visited Trevor in the Hospital. He is getting better because he wanted to ride with us.
John Hinds led us straight to a nice café in Te Aroha.
After lunch we followed John Hinds via some nice back roads via Tahuna to Highway one where we said our good buys and went home.
Another nice day out in good company. Thanks to tail end Charlies Charlie and Sig.
May 17
Three riders out enjoying the day today. Sig Falkenhaug took us around the back roads near Karaka. Lunch at Clarks Beach, and then back to Auckland via Aka Aka.
May 24
Just two of us on the ride today. We knew there would be rain and dressed accordingly, but apart from rain on the Bombay Hills and a few scattered showers the weather was kind to us. We went along Island Block Road, Falls Road, Taniwha Road and Matahuru Road. All nice country roads, and Matahuru was the nicest of all. It turns to gravel half way along, and gradually deteriorates over the next nine km with the final section quite slippery. All part of the fun! Had lunch in Ngatea with Trevor and Di.

Motorcycle Tips and Tricks

YOU DON'T have to have the mechanical know-how of a MotoGP technician to perform simple home-servicing tasks; some decent tools and a little common sense are all you need to keep your bike in tip-top shape.

Ideally, get hold of a workshop manual for your machine for a better understanding of how each task should be carried out. Most will give pictures detailing each part of the process; a good manual will also list the tools you'll need to complete the job.

Like a chef's knives, using quality tools are half the battle to a successful job, so avoid using the underseat toolkit if you can.

Obviously, if you're not 100 per cent comfortable working on your own bike then ask a knowledgeable mate to watch over you.

TYRES - Pressures

When was the last time you checked your bike's tyre pressures? It should be done on a weekly basis, but many of us forget to keep an eye on one of the most vital parts of our bike's set-up.

Underinflated tyres tend to affect handling and braking as the lack of pressure means the tyre wall isn't firm enough to properly cope with the forces exterted on it. Overinflation can also result in a deterioration in handling, as well as a reduced contact patch with the road. This can result in a lack of grip under braking.

Use a quality pressure gauge to accurately check your bike's tyre pressures. Consult the owner's manual for the correct pressure. Remember, your tyres may need more pressure if you regularly ride with a pillion passenger. Always check your pressures when they're cold.

It's also worth checking the condition and tread depth of the tyres while you're at it.
