Hi All

Welcome to daylight savings. This is the time of the year I look forward to. Having daylight after work makes for great riding. Hopefully the weather warms up soon so we don't all have to wrap up so much.

I haven't been to many club nights lately as my job has changed and I now spend every other week in Sydney.  The good news is that I'm in Auckland this week so I will see you all at club night on Thursday.

Be sure to mark your calendars for The 2019 Ronnie Run on Sun 3rd November.  We need everyone there to make the day a success.  Also please invite all your motorcycling mates.  The more that attend the more we can donate.

In the ProRider section below there is a button to click that takes to to the ACC Cash-back Questions & Answer page.  If you haven't got your head around it yet.  This is a great place to start.

Check out the NH Facebook page or the website for our latest rides and events.  The links are below in the newsletter.

Hi All
Well what a busy month for me the month started off with my playing the role of Father David (a kind Priest) in a short film called Salvation, then it was a Leading Extra on a new TV series called “Jazz Band” and then straight on to the plane to Oz for some well-earned R & R, sort off.

This flight started out a bit stressful but thanks to Les and in particular Judy for their awesome help made it an enjoyable experience. After clearing Customs, I realised that I had arrived at the airport minus my insulin. This being the first time I have travelled while on insulin I had left it at home. What to do???

We called the doctor to see if we could get a script sent/faxed while they were getting their heads around that we had called the daughter to see if she could bring it in to the airport and we would have to figure out how to get it so you can see stress levels rising. We had seen Judy assisting some dignitaries through customs. She was busy and no time to stop. Then while we were trying to sort the problem out Les called to find where we were, then arrives Judy our knight in shining armour. Our daughter arrived with the insulin and Judy with her clearance went out and met her and bought it in for me. Then she took us to the dignitaries lounge where we relaxed before boarding our flight. Thank-you SOOO MUCH Judy and if this attracts a fine Sheriff it was worth it.

You’ll also be pleased to know I once again exceeded walking targets while in Oz. Then I hit the ground running, with a Lead in an advert for Abe’s Bagels. Then it was onto the bike with a ride to Wellington for Coordinators meeting. Thursday morning saw Wayne and myself meeting at Papakura Autobahn then heading off, thankfully the rain had stopped, it was however cold and windy, the 8-hour ride down turned into a 10-hour ride, with such a strong head wind we had a few more stops that usual.

The desert road opened at around 9 in the morning before we arrived the temperature was 7° it felt colder and probably was with the wind chill factor, there was still enough snow on the ground (in places) to get the tourists out of their vehicles making snowmen and snowballs. Anyone travelling to Wellington needs to be aware there are heaps of roadworks and slow traffic. We arrived at the Top 10 in the Hutt at 7pm. It is such a small world our neighbours were a group of Harley riders some of whom I had met before at the Red Knights run. We had a chat then it was into the room for a 99% sugar free beer thanks to Wayne. Dam he has a lot of space in the trike’s storage compartments.

Today see’s me writing this report and a short presentation for tomorrow’s meeting where I have been asked to talk on maximizing the ACC cashback incentive. Well it was an interesting meeting with a lot of good idea’s and things to think about. I will be discussing with the committee when I get back. Speaking of which it is looking like a head wind all the way back. I was surprised at how few people knew about the cash back scheme so have included info below. So, can I encourage you all to get onboard and if you want to use an alternative to Pro Rider there are plenty of other Ride Forever providers in Auckland.

  1. October’s Branch Dinner will be held at The Postman’s Leg, 43-51 Downing St, Glenfield, Auckland 0629
  1. The Ronnie Run Les has the event planning well underway we need to start promoting this ride from now on. All our celebrities have fallen through this year so if you know of any that would be available please let someone on Committee know otherwise, you’ll be stuck with me, and I don’t think I have quite reached celebrity status yet.
  1. Please Note that Decembers Branch meeting will be held on the 12th of December due to a golf tournament being held on the 5th. Please mark this in your diary’s now as I know December becomes very busy.
  1. ACC Motorcycle Rego Cash Back Programme

Out Cruising
8 Sept - Sheriff
No wet arse today, reasonable turnout for the Bikers in Blue ride, maybe 200 bikes. Ray Woolfe led the ride on a 2019 Indian Scout from Pakaranga Placemakers to Silverdale Placemakers, I scored a $50 Harley voucher. Bikes and groups of all descriptions. Opie needed a trailer, He picked the wrong day to get a puncture
11 Sept - Charlie Tee
Fourteen people riding today, and a fifteenth who came to the meeting point but got a call from work just after he arrived. John Pearce led us to Shelly Beach, with a group of six splitting off at Kaukapakapa to do some gravel riding and then joining us at lunch. It looked like it might rain after lunch, but the rain didn't develop. Thanks to Don Baverstock for being TEC.

15 Sept - Charlie Tee
Fifteen riders out on a beautiful spring day today. Michael Daviesvolunteered to lead us to Port Albert. Wayne Painter was TEC. Unfortunately, the first corner marker failed to hold his position, and the last three riders got lost. I texted them with information about a regroup point, but we didn't catch up with each other until lunch.

The Port Albert General Store is closed for a few days, but we rang them at a regroup point and were able to change our destination to Te Hana. Usually the cafe in Te Hana is very good, but today their coffee machine wasn't working, and although they have a drip machine they had not turned it on, so lunch was missing a vital ingredient, at least as far as I was concerned.

After lunch, six of us led by Grant Douglas went exploring the gravel roads around Tapora, finding a few I hadn't ridden before. We took Pa Hill Road, Burma Road, and Okahukura Road, with a stop at Birds Beach where the tide was in making it an idyllic spot. Nice views from some of the gravel roads. Back to SH16 via Wharehine Road, which has just been re-gravelled but isn't particularly difficult. All the other gravel roads were in very good condition and for the most part not too dusty. All our bikes could do with a wash though.

Another good day out!

22 Sept -  Sheriff
Thanks Far North Branch for another great rally, My 20th. Excellent food Frid, Sat and Sun, Fantastic ride on Sat enjoyed by 99% of the riders.TEC did a fantastic job as did all the corner markers. Ride led by my old mate from the 60s, Far Nth Branch Vice Pres Pete Groves. 22 riders took off from Oakley service station off to Mangakaramea onto highway 14 over to Tangamahini off to Mangakahe Rd to lunch at Parakao cafe down to Mangatupere, gassed up and I took off to Tutukaka to see an old mate, and back to One tree Point camp for the Pyjama theme party. (I dont wear PJS).Great BAND played Great music and have put their hands up for next year. Blue sky weekend excellent, now Home

26 Sept - Charlie Tee
Eight people came to the cultural outing at Waitakaruru Arboretum and Sculpture Garden today. Unfortunately, one couple decided that they knew better than their GPS how to get there, and consequently arrived half an hour late, by which time the rest of us were well into our walk around the gardens. They made their own way around, and caught up with us later over lunch.

The six of us were given a guided tour by one of the owners, John Wakeling. The garden was created in a disused quarry from 1991, and now has 20,000 trees and shrubs, and more than 100 sculptures over the 17 ha site, which has several lakes and views over the surrounding farmland. It was a lovely place to wander around, and worth coming back to, perhaps in autumn to see how the garden changes with the seasons.

Lunch was at the excellent Willow Glen Cafe in Gordonton.

Departing Warehouse covered carpark in Albany at 10.00am
Destination decided on the day.
These rides are proving very popular.
Andrew Leader runs the "Twists and Turns" low speed manoeuvring sessions that Ulysses set up some years ago.

They are run on the first Saturday of the month at  Kelston Girls High School, 1 Archibald Rd, Kelston, West Auckland 0602.

All North Harbour members are invited to attend.
It’s a great opportunity to practice all those key low speed skills in a safe, supportive environment.  For instance when did you last practice an emergency stop?  Plenty of skilled riders attend to help with technique and encouragement and they are not judgemental.  Better to practice where there are people to help pick the bike up if you lay it down!
The school entrance is first on your right as you turn off Great North Road into Archibald Road:

Upcoming Events

One fine summer's evening, Paddy, Mick and Liam are riding back home from the bar, all three of them on Paddy's motorcycle.

Of course, they get stopped by a cop who says to them, "This motorcycle is only licensed to carry two people, and there are three of you. One of you will have to get off and walk."

"Three of us?" says Paddy as he turns to Mick. "Jeez, what happened to Rory and Niall?"

A motorcycle patrolman was rushed to hospital with an inflamed appendix. The doctors operated on him and when he came round he was relieved when they told him all had gone to plan and he was going to be fine.

But the patrolman kept feeling something pulling at the hairs on his chest. He was worried that something may be wrong but he was still too weak from the surgery to do anything. Eventually, he managed to pull his hospital gown down enough to check what was causing the discomfort. When he looked down at his chest he saw three wide strips of ultra-adhesive tape stuck firmly to him. Written on it in large black letters was the message:

"Get well soon... from the nurse you gave the ticket to last week. I'll be round to remove the tape later."
