Spring is the Season of New Growth!

From The Desk of Our Executive Director

As we wrap up our spring season and head into summer we have much to be thankful for at SOLE.  We have made new connections, brought new personnel into the fold, raised critical funds, run numerous experiential programs, and even found the time to breathe once in awhile!

A noteworthy accomplishment was the continuation of our Project Vision Experience program for Lake Pend Oreille High School offered this past quarter.  This custom-tailored SOLE Experience focused on a dual-credit design which included chemistry and leadership courses.  9th-12th grade youth were able to participate in this rich experiential curricula, which was centered on place-based based education, consistent fieldwork, and outdoor leadership opportunities.

Programming included students becoming
certified as IdahH20 Master Water Stewards allowing them to monitor (3) separate stream locations using (3) separate assessment tools, on (2) separate site visits.  Students were also able to visit the Idaho Youth Water Summit at the University of Idaho to observe their peers from other North Idaho schools who were presenting.  What is most exciting is that some LPOHS students will be returning during the 2015-16 school year to present, so stay-tuned there!

In addition, to the outdoor science curriculum that students were able to take on students were exposed to a thorough outdoor leadership curriculum which included team-building activities and group initiatives, formal leadership-based lessons and practical experiences such as serving as "Leader of the Day" during all Fieldwork Experiences.

Check out some of the student comments shared during this last quarter.

Comments From The Field:

"I like this class because of the combination of project-based learning and self-evaluation.  I enjoyed learning more about my leadership stye"

"This course has been an unexpected surprise of me, I'm happy I go to be a part of it"

"I'm glad I came on this trip!  I was in a terrible mood, until I got I feel great!"

In addition, to the above 3 months program we facilitated a super fun Stewardship Experience with Forrest Bird Charter School which included a Leave No Trace Awareness Workshop, and trail work in the beautiful Ross Creek Cedars located in the Cabinet Mountains.

SOLE has had other accomplishments during the spring to include raising and securing critical funds to continue our programming efforts throughout North Idaho and beyond!  This included raising $2,000 for youth scholarships through our participation in Idaho Gives - a 24 hour day of giving.   In addition, SOLE's SnowSchool Experience program was also recognized through the awarding of a $10,000 grant from the Pandhandle Alliance for Education (PAFE) for our 5th grade SnowSchool Experience program for the Lake Pend Oreille School District.  This will ensure that every 5th grade student in LPOSD will have the opportunity to explore their winter wonderland while learning essential academic skills.

While we had great success this season, we realize that our work is far from over. Our Board of Directors has met and we are revamping our strategic plan to ensure that the youth of North Idaho, Western Montana, Eastern Washington, and beyond have direct access to the novel experiential and outdoor education programming that we offer - so stay-tuned to see what is happening next!

Please say "Hi" if you see us in town, or stop by our office at 301 North 1st Avenue, in downtown Sandpoint, Idaho to learn more about what we do or to see how you can get involved.  If you don't see us in the office, know that we are "out there" doing some good - providing transformational outdoor experiences for youth, so they can truly explore, achieve, and lead!

Happy Trails,

Dennison Webb, M.A.
