Message From Vice Chair

Hi ALASD members.  
My name is Steve Vande Kop and I will be assuming the position of Association Chair as of January 1, 2015.  
What a great time to be in the assisted living business.  Along with the good times, we will be facing challenges also.  That is what our association is all about, helping our members.
For the past 6 months or more the entire board of directors has been laying out a new format for ALASD.  We feel that there are many improvements that can be made to the benefit of our members.  As most of you know we now have a new Administrative Director, Lethia Marienau, who is anxious to get her hands dirty doing things that need to be done.  You may have noticed the new logo.  The new website will be available very shortly.  The newsletter is going to contain much more information about issues that we deal with.  We have two new Regional representatives who are going to bring new ideas to the table.

 Look forward to seeing the ‘NEW ALASD’.
One thing I always tell my staff when we have meetings is that it is important to hear lots of conversation and laughing when I walk in.  I believe this makes for a ‘homey’ atmosphere within the campus. I also believe that as an Association we need to have lots of ‘conversation and laughing’ to make our group give a warm feeling to all members.
I am looking forward to the coming year!  Let us know what we can do for you.

Senior Living Executives Discuss Factors
Impacting Future of Profession


ALEXANDRIA, Va. – November 14, 2014 – The Assisted Living Federation of America hosted 200 executives who work to advance excellence in senior living at the 2014 ALFA Senior Living Executive Forum. The two-day event November 12-13 in New Orleans, LA focused on key issues shaping the industry today.
“The ALFA Forum is a robust and collaborative learning experience that helps guide and educate senior living professionals as they strategize about innovative ways to improve their businesses and in turn, the seniors and families they serve,” said Maribeth Bersani, ALFA interim president and CEO and senior vice president of public policy.
Leadership and crisis management expert Lt. General Russel Honore in a keynote speech explored leadership challenges, building business relationships by finding a common purpose, and making smart choices in the face of a crisis. “You grow up learning the definition of leadership is getting others to perform a task or function. The new normal is leadership means the ability to get others to willingly follow you to perform a task or mission,” said Honore, who led the federal government’s efforts to combat the effects of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. “The opportunities are on the other side of the impossible.”
Afternoon discussions between ALFA’s Executive Roundtable members and ALFA’s President’s Council members focused on key industry trends including ethics and aging, technological innovations, leadership, sales staff strategies, and building strong relationships with the media.
Aging expert and academic Dr. Harry Moody discussed the need to rebrand aging and address how we respond to fears of aging in a Thursday morning presentation. “It doesn’t matter what you say, it matters what your customer hears.”
Following Moody’s presentation, Executive Roundtable members met with peer groups to discuss and dissect the opportunities and challenges facing them today.
