STATE REGION CHANGES APPROVED
The previous regions of 1,2,3 and 4 have been changed to reflect  the regions used by the Department of Health.  This was discussed at the previous board meetings and approved at the most recent board meeting. The Regions will now be as seen on the map:
Western Region, Central Region, Northeastern Region, and Southeastern Region.
Please check the map to see what region you are part of.

As always contact the board with any questions or comments.

It is with regret the we announce the resignation of Julie Schelling our previous Region 3 Rep.  With the changing of the regions map, Brandy Fiala has moved into the Southeastern Region position.  The Northeastern Region is now open for a Region Representative. Thank You to Julie for her years of service and dedication to the ALASD.  She was serving in her first year of her third term on the board.  She will be re-locating to Kansas City to pursue her Home Health business.
We wish her all the best and will miss her!

Please contact a board member if you are interested in being the Northeastern Region Rep.
The board will be appointing the position in the next 3 months.

The Spotlight On Assisted Living Centers was held at Mitchell Technology Institute in Mitchell on March 5th and was a great success. Thank you to Avera Education and Staffing Solutions for hosting this in conjunction with ALASD.  The ALASD Board of Directors met for our face to face meeting in Mitchell the day before.  Thankfully the weather cooperated for the travel, but it was cold!  The meeting minutes can be downloaded at the link below.  The Spotlight conference included new information regarding upcoming changes in the Assisted Living Industry.  There will now be a State Registry for Medication Assistants.  Grandfathering of current practicing Med Aids is planned to begin May 1st 2015.  Medication Aide Applications will be available on BON website May 1st and on line verification of Med Aide registry status will be available at no charge by May 1st.  Non Grandfathered applicants trained AFTER August 31, 2015 will be registered beginning September 1, 2015 and will be required to take the BON exam.  The exam will be provided at no cost, will be offered on line and must be proctored by an RN (or other person as designated by RN). All Med Aides will be required to renew every 2 years.

A new staff training option for UAP's will be to become an Unlicensed Diabetes Aide (UDA).
This will require an approved Protocol followed by the RN and completion of the course by the UAP.
Please visit www.nursing.sd.gov for more information on the SD BON website.

I don’t have to remind anyone how cold this winter has been.

But we are just around the corner from spring.  We can be fortunate we
haven’t had the problem the East coast is having. South Dakota isn’t so bad after all.

The Board of Directors met on March 4 in Mitchell the day before
the ‘Spotlight on Assisted Living’ was presented.  We were asked to
contribute to the program and we appreciate that Avera considered us
to assist with the details.  It was an outstanding program with the emphasis
on assisted living.  There were about 90 individuals who attended from
throughout the state.  The Department of Health did an awesome job also.

At the Board meeting we addressed much needed items.  One thing we did
is make minor changes to the 4 regions within South Dakota.  There are details
on these changes within this month’s newsletter.  We feel these changes will
make it easier for everyone to identify with their region and its representative.

We formed 2 committees to take on responsibilities for future issues.
One committee is being headed by Nathan Gelhaus from Angelhaus in Aberdeen.
He will choose others from our membership to help put together the Fall
Conference which will be held in Aberdeen in September.  A lot of work goes into
planning these conferences and we have plans for one of the best.  If he calls,
don’t be afraid to offer your time to help him out.  I know he will appreciate it.

We formed another committee who is being led by Allan Svennes from
Trail Ridge in Sioux Falls.  This committee is going to be working on Medicaid
reimbursement rates.  Al’s plan is to compile as much information as possible
on rate history, rates from neighboring states, and I believe he is considering
asking every facility in the State of South Dakota to respond to a survey on
costs of operation.  If you do receive a survey, it is absolutely necessary that
everyone respond.  We need to have all of the facts that we can to pass on to all
of the legislators in South Dakota so they are all aware of what we face.
We feel this committee is the best tool we have for informing Pierre as to
what our needs are for compensation.  Al will also need help because t
his will be a huge project.

GET INVOLVED!

Thanks to everyone for the support we have seen
the past few months.
