“The Morning Shark Stretch yoga club has received an overwhelming response from kids and parents at Vista Academy. I've been approached the last few classes by parents asking if we can find a way for it to continue. I'm sure this has come up before. Ms. Lauren is really amazing with the kids. Let me know if there is any way to continue yoga into spring” - Amy McGuire
This is not an uncommon story or request for the Sean O’Shea Foundation! Our schools love our mindful programs and our teachers. Schools notice the immediate benefits of learning mindful tools for peace, especially when you realize that stress blocks learning and stress is the greatest cause of nearly 90% of all chronic illnesses!!
What is amazing is that Sean recognized this over 15 years ago. Sean started blazing the trail for peace by offering low-income community schools a yoga program for their students. Sean was one of the few offering yoga to at-risk children and low-income communities.
Today we continue to “Blaze The Trail for Peace” by implementing Sean’s vision and our mindful programs throughout San Diego County and Los Angeles. We have received requests for our programs in New York, Georgia, Florida, Texas, and Colorado and hope to establish our foundation in these locations soon.
Meanwhile, in order to provide our program to the at-risk youth we will need your help so this year we are asking all our peeps, friends and families to support our annual end of the year Empowering Youth campaign…”BLAZING THE TRAIL FOR PEACE”.
We hope you; community and friends continue to invest in our kids for the future by supporting our work, our cause and Sean’s vision. Here is how you can help:
Opening Doors to Another Deep Form of Healing and Relaxation - The Yoga 4 Kids with Cancer Program - By Liz Fautsch
On October 2011 a group of teachers from the Sean O’Shea Foundation began offering a special yoga program at Rady’s Children’s Hospital for pediatric oncology patients and their caregivers. We call them the “Dream Team” - partly because of their selfless service, but also because so often the individual sessions they do with the kids end with the children falling asleep! Unlike in a regular yoga class, this is a wonderful outcome because children with a cancer diagnosis experience symptoms of stress and anxiety that can disrupt sleeping patterns, which in turn affects healing.
Teachers use their creativity and compassion to find stretches, breathing exercises and visualizations that relieve a patient’s tension and improve well-being. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to join in. Often it’s not until they take a couple of deep “cleansing breaths” that they even realize how much tension they’ve been holding due to the uncertainty of the disease and watching their children suffer.
The SOSF Dream Team visit the children at Rady’s Children’s Hospital three times per week and have done so for over 4 years now.
