Leading the Way

The ACT Board of Directors is a dedicated group of individuals leading the way for ACT to be a successful performing arts organization. Each edition of The Spotlight features comments from a current board member. This newsletter introduces you to Whitney Welp.
I am proud and delighted to say hello and welcome to the ACT 2017-2018 season.  It is truly an honor to be part of the Ankeny Community Theatre board and, in turn, part of the Ankeny Committee Theatre family!

I have always enjoyed the spotlight, so the stage has always been a fun place for me! When I was younger, I was on the stage many times at a different community theatre. However, I have never seen a theatre quite like Ankeny Community Theatre. I have had the opportunity to meet many wonderful people, people who I now consider to be my friends.

I am a new actress at ACT. I auditioned for A Delightful Quarantine on a very cold evening this past January. As luck would have it, I got cast as Paula later that week. I so enjoyed acting and being in that spotlight again. Once this theatre gets you, it doesn’t let go. Since then, I have attended adult education classes, was part of the play selection committee, and when offered the role of Volunteer chair on the ACT board, I jumped at the opportunity.

Volunteers are what make ACT great, well actually volunteers are what makes ACT. It is an honor to do my part to assist ACT by organizing and recruiting volunteers. Just one shameless plug, we still need volunteers for The God Committee. : ) But on a serious note, I am truly humbled to be working with such amazing actors and actresses and so I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of ACT.

ACT would like you to add a little more chaos to your holiday activities and join us for A Christmas Chaos beginning December 8. An intrepid band of hapless actors and technicians put together their own production in only six hours! The play is a hilarious backstage comedy that pokes fun at the classic novel and everything that can go wrong with a theatrical production.

Cast members selected to perform in this madcap production are Alison Buechler, Garren Bugh, Susan Casber, Melody Derogatis, Monte Engh, Randal Foster, Will Harms, Doug Moon, Becky Plager, Al Price, Debbie Rasko, Grace Smithey, Nicole Titus, Matt Tuttle, Rebekah Tuttle, and Barb Wagner. Scott Nielsen is the director and Lynn Arterburn is the assistant director.

Almost, Maine Auditions Set

Auditions for Almost, Maine will be held Sunday, December 10 at 6:00 pm. and Monday, December 11 at 6:30 pm at the theater. The show is written for two men and two women to play all of the roles. However, since the script allows for flexible casting. Barb Wagner, the director, would like to cast ten men and nine women, ages 21+.  She is also interested in casting real-life couples, so encourage your spouse or significant other to come along and audition with you!

Almost, Maine is broken down into nine vignettes. Barb would like to use different actors/actresses for each one. Thus, there will be fewer rehearsals for everyone to have to attend – especially in the winter. For more information regarding auditions, please visit our website.

If you have any questions, please contact Barb Wagner (director) at bjwagner1@dmacc.edu.
