When I'm feeling anxious about money or I find I'm a little drunk with consumerism, I give money or time away (often, both). Something happens every time to bring me back to center. There is nothing more grounding than being reminded that when we give, we also receive and the world relies on this reciprocity to keep it evolving, growing and loving. It's practical magic.
Daily I careen between despair for our democracy and our planet and hope as I see so many people “woke”—awakened to the call to show up and speak up.

More than ever, we need to be clear minded and strong hearted. A practice of reflection illuminates our choices and guides our actions.

In this newsletter, I offer a practical tool for reflection and a heartfelt blessing for these times.
The end of the year can be a blur of rich food, plentiful drinks, overused credit cards and enough social interaction to send an extrovert screaming for solitude.

Moving into winter and a new year is also the perfect time to reflect on our choices, our actions, our experiences.

Every December, I carve out time to look back over my year. I review my work portfolio, assessing which projects have been profitable, successful, satisfying. I consider what activities have had heart and meaning: what surprised me? What delighted me? What touched me? I reflect on how well I am living my commitment to aging with vitality, gratitude, and laughter. What patterns am I ready to disrupt? What small experiments am I ready to begin?

Use this tool, a Year-End Assessment to guide your reflection and inform your intentions for 2018.
  1. The Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education: Great newsletter focused on research and education of compassion, altruism, and empathy.
  2. Finding the Wisdom to Survive Despite Sorrows: An excellent recent blog post from the Center for Courage & Renewal.
  3. How I Built This with Guy Raz: A podcast about innovators, entrepreneurs, and idealists, and the stories behind the movements they built.
In these times,

May we be centered, neither leaning forward in reaction or hanging back in despair.

May we be humble, listening in to what we don't understand and to those we have not heard.

May we be fierce, warriors of love, fighting for the safety and humanity of all.

May we tend to our relationships, ever strengthened by our connection to one another and to our place and to our planet.

Do good, be kind, stay in touch,
