Vulnerability is the birthplace of connection and the path to the feeling of worthiness. If it doesn't feel vulnerable, the sharing is probably not constructive.
- Brene Brown
THE END OF YEAR REFLECTION

Every December, I send out this End of Year Assessment. It’s a tool that provides a structured way for individuals and teams to reflect on all they have accomplished and learned, the people and conditions that brought out their best, and the wisdom and ambition they want to carry forward into the new year.

Depending on the degree of rigor and vulnerability, these conversations can range from rote and superficial to powerful and valuable.

A MEDITATION ON VULNERABILITY
If you ask for what you need, you risk being denied. Do it anyway.

If you show your tenderness, you are exposed. Do it anyway.

If you acknowledge mistakes, you open yourself to criticism. Do it anyway.

If you acknowledge what you do not know, you diminish your authority. Do it anyway.

If you lead with curiosity, with humility, you open yourself to learning something that may require you to question your certainty, to change your position. Do it anyway.

And yet, we hesitate, fearful we are wrong, missing something. Fearful we will be rejected or humiliated. Yet really, what is the cost of not daring to not venture outside our comfort zone? Of choosing contraction over expansion? Of choosing safety over adventure?

So just for today: summon the courage to have a hard conversation. Assume your point of view is valid and incomplete. Ask questions. Assume positive intent. Invite solutions and innovations you cannot imagine.
P.S.
  1. Mark your calendars and register for the February 2 Winter Retreat! I can promise it will be an afternoon of reflection, dialogue, movement, and re-commitment to your deepest intentions! Wherever you are in your journey, you will leave refreshed and inspired. Space will be limited.
  2. To everyone in the Bay Area, tune in to KQED Channel 9, on December 7 at 8pm for the Premiere TV Broadcast of And Then They Came for Us.

Spring is a time of birth and new beginnings. The seeds we have planted with our intention and attention have developed roots and are moving upward. What is needed to break through to the surface?
