Central Section: Closing the Gap

The East West Rail Consortium continues to work closely with Network Rail to identify a preferred route for the Central Section. This will extend the Western Section of East West Rail to Cambridge and East Anglia. This work is being led by Network Rail.

At this stage of development, two corridors have been identified as offering the best value for money. These are:

Bedford – Sandy  Cambridge
Bedford – Hitchin – Cambridge

Bicester – Bedford and Milton Keynes – Princes Risborough: Planning and survey work continues

Vegetation clearance work has been completed on the mothballed section of railway between Claydon Junction and Bletchley. Ground investigation work continues on both the mothballed and operational sections of railway. Ecology and environmental surveys are ongoing.
A series of public information evenings regarding initial proposals to improve safety at railway crossings has concluded. Feedback is now being considered. This will help inform future design development. This precedes formal public consultation by Network Rail expected to start later this year.
