2016 Summer Update

The 148th racing season at historic Saratoga Race Course is less than two weeks away and Bona Venture Stables is preparing for a strong showing at the premier race meet in North America.

We'll have as many as eight runners, including four potential debut runners, on the Saratoga grounds, even though the injury bug has slowed us down a bit this year.

Three year-olds, Cafe Y Blanco and Thawed Out, along with two exciting Two year-olds, Alley Oop and Majestic Bonnie will join veterans River of Dreams, Hashtag Bonnie, Nicholson and Leaveematthegate at Saratoga.  Our promising Two year-old Bushmill's Legend suffered a stress fracture in spring training and will be laid up until the fall, along with Play Unified, our Three year-old filly who debuted with an impressive wire-to-wire Saratoga win last summer, she's out also until this fall due to a stress fracture as well.

The first condition book for the Saratoga meet hasn't been published yet, so it is difficult to project race dates. The water gets much deeper and choppier at Saratoga, as trainers from all over the world relocate to upstate New York for the richest race meet in North America.

2016 BVS Saratoga Weekend
We were able to add an additional 10 seats in the luxurious Paddock Tent for Bona Venture Stables' Owners/Family/Friends Saratoga Weekend, July 29-31st. We can accommodate a maximum of 110 attendees. So, we have a few remaining spaces. If you are interested in joining the group please contact us immediately.

2016 New Horse Opportunities
Limited share opportunities remain in both Alley Oop, a dynamic 2 year-old filly by Discreet Cat, and Majestic Bonnie, a gorgeous and athletic 2 year-old fill by Majestic Warrior. Both 2 year-olds will debut at Saratoga this summer, with Majestic Bonnie targeted to start during the first week of the meet.

A 10% share in Alley Oop is priced at $15,800 and 10% shares in Majestic Bonnie are priced at $18,800. Half and quarter shares are also available. Contact Bona Venture Stables for more information.

Bushmill's Legend

This thrilling two year-old son of Giant's Causeway had been training well on the Oklahoma training track at Saratoga this past spring before a slight stress fracture in his right hind leg.

He is laid up at Steve Venosa's farm in Florida and we expect he'll return to training by mid-August and could be ready to race in the second half of the fall Championship Meet at Belmont Park.

Trainer: George Weaver

Majestic Bonnie

We discovered this gorgeous, athletic filly at the OBS April Sales where she was turning heads with her striking appearance and a track breeze in which she appeared to float over the track effortlessly.  We had to stretch our budget to the near breaking point, but we couldn't be happier with how she's taken to the race track.  This two year-old filly will debut on the turf as soon as the Saratoga meet opens this summer.

Trainer: George Weaver

Alley Oop

This two year-old New York bred filly has been galloping daily at Belmont Park since March and she's just about ready to begin a series of weekly breezes as Leah Gyarmati begins her final preparation to debut at Saratoga this summer.  She won't be ready to race until the second half of the meet, sometime after mid-August.

Cafe Y Blanco

Now a three year-old, this New York bred son of  international turf champion Cape Blanco, he's been breezing weekly over the Oklahoma training track at Saratoga. It took us more time that we wanted to get him into a regular training regime. He's now training consistently and has logged several works over the turf course. He'll be ready to debut this summer during the Saratoga meet. He is a New York bred and Breeders' Cup nominated.

Trainer: George Weaver

Nicholson has had a tough 2016 racing year, with only a 2nd and 3rd to show in six races since January. He's been in regular training without a major break since August of last year. He is targeted to run in a 6 1/2 furlong sprint at Belmont Park on July 15. Afterward, we'll see if it is time for a break or maybe a bit less competition at Finger Lakes or PARX in Philadelphia.

Trainer: Leah Gyarmati

Hashtag Bonnie

We continue to be baffled by this 4 year-old daughter of Henrythenavigator. She's only been able to run once this year, a 5th place finish back in January at Aqueduct. Her latest set back was a throat infection which has led to continued issues with her throat and breathing. We've treated the condition and she is finally back in full training. She may return to the starting gate July 16 in a maiden claiming race at 7 furlongs on the turf.

Trainer: Leah Gyarmati

River of Dreams

River of Dreams exploded down the Belmont turf stretch on June 2nd to capture his first win in dramatic fashion. He seems to have found a home on the turf and will return July 10 in a first level allowance run at 1 1/16th miles on the turf at Belmont Park. He'll move up to Saratoga after this run to prepare for the summer meet.

Trainer: Leah Gyarmati

He's training strongly since his return to the track this past spring after time off to mend from a suspensory injury. Leaveematthegate may make his race return July 17 at Belmont Park before heading north to Saratoga.

Trainer: Leah Gyarmati

Play Unified

Now a three year-old, this Louisiana bred filly had fully recovered from the removal of a bone chip in her knee last fall, she resumed training in the spring, only to develop a stress fracture in her shoulder.  She's been off since March and resumes training this month. She should ship into George Weaver's barn at Saratoga by mid-July and should be ready to race when the Belmont fall Championship meet begin in September.
Trainer: George Weaver

Thawed Out

Sent to the starting gate twice in June, only to be scratched due to first throwing the jockey during a post parade and a sore ankle next time, our NY bred three year-old by Frost Giant, he will again try to enter the starting gate July 14 in a 7 furlong turf sprint for NY breds.
Trainer: Jeremiah Englehart

Now a yearling, this New York bred filly by Include out of Royal Bonnie is growing at Stone Bridge Farm. Later this year she'll head south to Steve Venosa to begin early training and his thoroughbred racing career. She is the daughter of our first Breeders' Cup runner. Her father sired our second BC runner, Summer of Fun, who ran 3rd in the 2012 Juvenile Turf Championship.
