BACH: Saint Matthew Passion
Sunday, March 25, 2018, 4:00PM
Immanuel Congregational Church
10 Woodland Street
 Hartford CT

CONCORA has long been renowned for its masterful and moving performances of choral music by Johann Sebastian Bach. On March 25, the ensemble presents the monumental Saint Matthew Passion, one of two surviving settings by Bach of the Easter Passion story. During his lifetime, Bach conducted the Saint Matthew Passion in Holy Week services several times, and it was presented by his Leipzig successor a few more times. But it was only with Mendelssohn’s revival of the work in 1829 that this music burst into the larger world, and it has remained a foundational masterpiece ever since.

Calling for three choirs, soloists, and orchestra, the Saint Matthew Passion offers some of Bach’s grandest music, while exploring in the most intimate terms the very nature of faith and redemption.

Please join us on March 25 in the lovely, luminous sanctuary of Immanuel Congregational Church in Hartford when Artistic Director Chris Shepard leads CONCORA, vocal soloists, and members of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra Bach's Saint Matthew Passion.

Did you ever wish that you could have been a friend of J.S. Bach?

Though Bach is no longer with us, he has plenty of friends right here in Connecticut who make sure that we remember him - and his music. For more than twenty years, CONCORA's Friends of Bach has supported CONCORA’s performances of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach by raising funds to underwrite the annual Bach concert in Hartford, and by enhancing and informing our understanding of Bach and his music.
The Friends of Bach welcomes new members at any time - including you.

When you join the Friends of Bach by March 1, 2018, your name will be included on the "Friends of Bach" page in the program book for the March 25 concert, and you will be invited to a private reception following the concert, where you may visit with CONCORA's Artistic Director Chris Shepard and the musicians who will have just presented Bach's monumental Saint Matthew Passion.

Yes, I want to be a Friend of Bach!
Breathtaking... Moving... Magnificent!
That's what listeners had to say about CONCORA's concert of "Masses Ancient and Modern" on February 11 at Trinity College Chapel. It certainly was a thrilling experience to be in the soaring Gothic chapel surrounded by sublime Gregorian chant, Renaissance polyphony, and the searing Mass for Double Choir by Frank Martin. But the best part was seeing a sold-out crowd, many of whom drove a long way to hear this beautiful music.

Thank you to all who attended!  Your presence made the music all the more meaningful.
