Mid Council Relations

a bi-weekly newsletter from the OGA

OGA Bulletins

As 2017 comes to a close:

Mid Council Ministries is saying goodbye to a long-time colleague January 6th. Carol Hawkins is retiring after twenty-nine years of service, with the last twenty-four years as a consultant for the Church Leadership Connection program and Face-to-Face. She has been the patient voice on the other end of the phone when you or a minister in your synod or presbytery is searching for a new call. We in OGA are losing an energetic, hard-working colleague with a wonderful sense of humor and an enviable can-do spirit.

If you want to wish Carol well on her next journey, her email address is, phone number 502-569-5225.

And Welcome…

Jihyun Oh The new manager of call process support, Jihyun Oh, has been part-time in Louisville for the last several weeks; we are looking forward to seeing her regularly once she begins full-time at the first of the year. You can contact Jihyun at 502-569-5730 and Read more

Save the Dates

The 2018 Mid Council Leaders Gathering will be held at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in suburban Chicago Friday, October 5 to Sunday, October 7, beginning on the morning of the 5th and ending by noon on the 7th. The Association of Stated Clerks and Association of Mid Council Leaders gatherings will start Sunday afternoon and end on Tuesday, October 9.

For 2018, the Moderators’ Conference will be coming back to Louisville, in November. Exact dates will be announced once the hotel contract has been secured.

223rd GA Planning

If your mid council plans on either holding a gathering for your commissioners or sponsoring another event, the time has come to start making some decisions. Information about event planning is available on the assembly website. December 4 was the initial deadline for requests, but Andrew Yeager-Buckley might be able to fit your event in if he hears from you soon.

For space in the Exhibit Hall, see here. The deadline for those requests is January 29.

223rd GA Leadership

Andrew Yeager-Buckley has also recently emailed mid council leaders on behalf of the Co-Moderators, the Reverend Denise Anderson and the Reverend Jan Edmiston, as they select committee leaders for the 223rd General Assembly (2018). In accordance with the Standing Rules, your comments about potential leaders will be provided to the Co-Moderators and a small group of staff and elected individuals designated to advise them as they select committee moderators and vice moderators. Check your email for Andrew’s note, and make sure to follow up no later than January 15 if you have insights that can help Jan and Denise choose the most capable leaders for 223rd General Assembly (2018) assembly committees.

Blessed Holy-days!

We eagerly anticipate the Advent of the One who is with us always.
May our worship and witness in this season
reflect the Light that brings hope, peace, joy, and love to this weary world.

Tricia Dykers Koenig
Associate Director for Mid Council Relations

The folks in Research Services really need those before Christmas.

Being prepared
Gun violence at churches in Charleston, Sutherland Springs, and other locations has heightened safety concerns for churches. Sessions and mid councils can begin to prepare by consulting Developing Emergency Plans: Acts of Violence on Church Property.

PDA’s Jim Kirk is also available for presentations on this topic via GoToMeeting or another media platform, upon request.
