The Gospel According to Matthew 25–
Equipping the Church

February 5, 2018

From Tricia Dykers Koenig,
Associate for Mid Council Relations

Center for Womanist Leadership Inaugural Gathering

Please encourage women of color in your synod, presbytery, and congregations to attend Union Presbyterian Seminary’s Inaugural Gathering of the Center for Womanist Leadership, April 5–7 in Richmond, VA. The stellar line-up of speakers is headlined by keynoter Alice Walker addressing the theme “Bearing Witness to Womanism: What Is, What Was, What Shall Be.” The Center for Womanist Leadership (CWL) Inaugural Gathering is a study and action center for womanist activists, academics, religious practitioners from all faith traditions, healthcare providers, artists, researchers, policymakers, and students from a variety of disciplines. The conference will have three platforms: education/training, research, and community engagement.
When you spread the word and learn that folks from your mid council are coming, let me know; we will try to facilitate a gathering of PC(USA) mid council leaders in conjunction with the conference.

White Privilege Conference

Who’s coming with you to the White Privilege Conference, April 4–7, 2018 in Grand Rapids, Michigan?
As Co-Moderator Denise Anderson has emphasized in affirming PC(USA) support for the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, the General Assembly has repeatedly committed our church to live out the Gospel as expressed by Jesus Christ in Matthew 25. (You can also pledge your personal support.)

If we in the PC(USA) are serious about justice, antiracism, intercultural ministry, diversity, inclusiveness, and evangelism, we must all grapple with the personal and systemic sin that is holding us back from fully reflecting the Gospel. In addition to your staff and leadership cabinet and those serving on committees such as justice and Self Development of People, this work is also important for COMs, CPMs, church growth and evangelism committees, finance people—everyone. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) 10% discount code is PCWPC19. Please publicize widely.

Coffee with the Clerk

Join J. Herbert Nelson, II, Stated Clerk of the General Assembly, for “Coffee with the Clerk,” a series of conversations to discuss current events, the state of the church, experiencing the world as a Christian and Presbyterian, the upcoming 223rd General Assembly (2018), and more. “Coffee with the Clerk” will happen Mondays at 11:00 a.m. (Eastern) through the Spirit of GA Facebook page, except when the Stated Clerk’s travel schedule requires adjustments. Advance notice will be sent to you through Spirit of GA regarding any schedule changes. If you miss the live feed, check back later for the recording.

Urgent Immigration Action Alert

Please urge your congregations to respond to the emergency caused when one of our fellow Presbyterians was detained by ICE. Here’s more information about the arrest of Roby Sanger, a member of First Presbyterian Church of Metuchen, NJ, now at risk of being separated from his family and congregation.
And for those willing to take a further step to support our immigrant siblings, consider this action alert on Dreamers, with more information here.

One Great Hour of Sharing

Each gift to One Great Hour of Sharing allows us to share God’s love with our neighbors in need by helping to improve the lives of people in challenging situations—providing access to sustainable food sources, clean water, education, and opportunity. Here’s some assistance in promoting OGHS this year, including information about a webinar specifically for mid councils, to be held Tuesday, February 13, at 12:00 pm EST.
