Pastor and Ruling Elder Cohorts

Many thanks to David Feltman for sharing his excitement about the pastor and ruling elder cohorts that are strengthening the ministry of the Presbytery of North Central Iowa.

Presbytery Prays Pentecost

Last week I was privileged to participate in a rousing Service of Prayer, Song, and Scripture with the Presbytery of Carlisle. In addition to the multiple voices, brass ensemble, and red stoles, the worship included this way of calling upon the Spirit throughout the year: “The 44 red candles represent the 44 congregations of the Presbytery of Carlisle. One representative from each congregation is invited to take another congregation’s candle at the conclusion of worship. That congregation is asked to light the candle and pray for the named congregation regularly through the coming year (e.g. at Session meetings, in Sunday worship, or at other times). Be creative. Please notify the congregation for which you are praying.”

Mid Council Lounge @ GA223

The Mid Council Lounge will be Room 280 in the America’s Convention Center. Synod and presbytery staffers are invited to stop in for fellowship. Through the generosity of the Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy, beverages will be provided Monday through Friday (come early in the day!).

There will be a few times during General Assembly when the room will be reserved for a special event or a specific conversation; if you’d like to schedule something, please let me know.

Constitutional Corner

In this issue, Laurie reflects on per capita from the perspective of the Book of Order.

PDA Webinar on Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico and Hurricane Maria: since last September, the devastating storm and the commonwealth island have been almost synonymous. Puerto Rico’s entire population of 3.5 million Americans was impacted, including our seventy-four PC(USA) congregations and 6,000 sisters and brothers. Everyone has a story to tell.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has been listening and responding. Perhaps you have too, or perhaps you’d like to listen and respond. To hear firsthand stories, and to learn about PDA’s involvement and how you can participate, register for the webinar, to be held May 31st from 2–3 p.m. EDT.

Communications Services Plan (CSP)

The Communication Services Plan of the Synod of the Sun provides a cost-effective way for presbyteries to connect with their constituents, their ministries, and the broader culture. The CSP helps presbyteries to have “platform continuity” across print and electronic media, creating a seamless “voice” across their website, social media, e-mail, and more. Through these different media, presbyteries can share ideas, tell stories, offer pastoral care, and so much more.

Presbyteries often struggle to communicate effectively with their congregations, often relying on already overworked employees or volunteers for website and social media maintenance and updates. There are those, too, with no cohesive plan for communicating the stories of the Good News outside, or even inside, presbytery and congregational circles. The Communications Services Plan of the Synod of the Sun seeks to be a resource for those presbyteries—whether or not you are in the synod. The CSP is a menu-based plan that starts with a Communications Plan and works based on the needs, dreams, and calling of an individual presbytery. Consult the webpage or the brochure for more information, or contact Thomas Riggs, communications & administration coordinator, at 214-390-1894.

Insurance Board Webinars

Bob Foltz-Morrison passed along information about a webinar by the Insurance Board concerning the participation in church of convicted sex offenders. The live date is now past, but they post recordings, so you can find this topic—and others—at their archive page.

Sharing the Goods

I had the pleasure recently of staying at Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center (Little Rock, Arkansas), and learned of their Sharing the Goods ministry, which helps nonprofits and churches improve their facilities and reduce costs so they can focus more resources on their mission. Through another nonprofit, Good360, Ferncliff is a Community Redistribution Partner that receives product donations from companies and sells them at deep discounts. I encourage you to check it out and see whether becoming a member would help your congregations, mission partners, camps, or other ministries.

Monthly Hymn Focus

The Presbytery of the Miami Valley is joining in a presbytery-wide emphasis on selected hymns and reflection questions. The Leadership Council is encouraging committees, churches, sessions, groups, and individuals to focus on these hymns as a regular spiritual activity in the year ahead.
