Members of the public, including representatives of FAR and MWRA, provided many comments to MassDEP's plan to extend the water quality compliance variances currently held by Cambridge and Belmont. On August 31, MassDEP responded to to those comments. Click here to read the comments as well as Mass DEP's responses.

Additional information regard our ongoing efforts to achieve water quality improvements in Little River, Alewife Brook and Upper Mystic River will be made available on our website as it becomes available.
On Sunday September 18th, 100 volunteers consisting of crew and sailing athletes as well as coaches and parent volunteers picked up trash at Alewife Reservation as part of the Friends of Cambridge Athletics Walk and Serve-A-Thon. Thanks to Alice Heller, Charley McCabe and Jake Stout for leading the groups to debris areas, and Larry Childs for organizing the day. Fresh Pond was also well attended to by these high school angels.

We all left with a sense of accomplishment and over a dozen and a half contractor bags full of paper, plastic, glass garbage and other  recyclables.

Friends of Alewife Reservation key volunteer leaders were Charlie McCabe and Jake Stout. Executive director, Ellen Mass  thanked everyone for their participation and concern for our local environment and wished them well on their clean up way.

Volunteers from Boston Consulting Group (BCG), a global management consulting corporation headquartered in Boston, helped with Blair Pond maintenance in Cambridge on September 22. Volunteers removed oriental bittersweet vines and lots of metals. It was a great team effort!

Many thanks to the employees of BCG for their help and to The United Way for introducing us to such a capable and enthusiastic crew!
