March 2016 Newsletter

A word from our Deputy Chair - Rachel

Last month saw us celebrating a number of successes; firstly at the ONB
Counties- some brilliant individual swims as well as great results from some of
our relay teams. This was followed by 4SSC winning the Club Award at the 2016
Chipping Norton Sports Awards – all fantastic achievements for 4SSC!
As a committee, we have been discussing how to celebrate the ‘club’ aspect of
4SSC and are pleased to announce the pending introduction of monthly social
sessions open to all members. After Easter, the last Wednesday session of each
month at Kingham Hill School will be open to all as follows:

6-7pm Academy, Pre-Competition & Fitness squads
7-8.30pm All other squads including Masters

The first one will take place on Wednesday 27 April and ALL swimmers are
invited to these monthly sessions, regardless of whether or not they usually
train on Wednesdays. The aim of these sessions is to enable members to get to
know other swimmers within their squads they may rarely meet, to introduce a
‘fun’ factor, and to enable the swimmers to have some social time in the pool.
These sessions will initially be introduced on a trial basis and reviewed at the
end of the summer term, so feedback will be welcomed.
In case you haven’t already heard, Kim is undertaking a ‘sponsored slim Kim’
over the next few months so please do sponsor him if you can. All sponsorship
raised will be split equally between the Tenerife camp and 4SSC Club funds.
Thank you for your support! Kim has already benefited from our support with
a 60th birthday box full of salad, vegetables and fruit (along with a bottle of
champagne!) to help get him started....

We would like to congratulate our new Club Captains - Eloise Upton and Toby Fernandez who will take up their new roles from Easter. We wish you both well in your new roles!
With best wishes
Parents Please Note
We are currently in the process of reviewing our fee structure. Fees have not been revised since September 2014 and due to increasing costs, this has now become necessary. This will be advised shortly and will be implemented with next term's invoices.

Wow didn't we do well ! 4SSC won the Club Award at the Chipping Norton Sports Awards! Below are photos of our Coaches, Club Captains and a few committee members at the Awards Ceremony on 26th Feb in the Town Hall. As you can see the award was presented by the Mayor.

Updates from our Head Coach … Kim

The Counties are now over.
We had 13 individuals qualified, 22 Relays, producing 53 PBs, 13 finalists and 23 top 10 placings with 16 medals.
Congratulations and thank you to all that represented 4 Shires as both individuals and relays.  It was a real pleasure to be part of the team that competed so well.
This month sees us competing at Oxford, Cardiff and High Wycombe.
Best of luck to all and I hope to see some more Regional times being achieved.
The sponsored tour swim to Tenerife is progressing well and we have nearly reached 400,000m, only 3,600,000m to goJ.
My sponsored get fit (weight loss) has started and will run for 3 months, please sponsor me as all money made will be split between the Tour and the Club. All those swimmers and parents of swimmers that sponsor me will be looked on favourably when the (10 x 100m) Fly sets pop up to celebrate my Birthday.
On Friday 26th we were represented by a group of Club, swimmers, coaches, committee members and parents at Chipping Norton Town Hall where we received the Team Award (see below)
Congratulations to you all.

Galas Update

As Kim has said, we have a good number of external meets over the next few weeks, with our top end swimmers trying hard to improve times to secure their SE Regional entries which close soon.

As a club, our focus is turning towards the 4SSC Spring Championships which will be run over two Saturdays next month, the 9th and the 23rd @ Carterton Leisure Centre. We've decided upon the races and an email will be going out shortly so that you can enter. We'll be re-introducing "team's", which will be selected earlier this year so that swimmers will know who they are swimming with & against. We'll also need lots of volunteers again please.

Swimmers should enter as many events as possible, it's a lovely supportive atmosphere to have a go at some races that perhaps aren't your natural choices.

Also don't forget that the age group medals and trophies, that are awarded at the Christmas party, take into consideration each swimmers FINA points that have been achieved over both the Spring & Autumn Championships. So to coin a phrase, you have to be in it, to win it!

We are also looking at having the Autumn Championships 2016 as a Licenced (Level 4 Development Meet) event, that way times will count towards County qualifying times for 2017.

Swimmers of the Month

Junior Swimmer of the month for February is Ben Warner. Ben Warner has only been with 4 Shires for 18 months yet shows the confidence of a more senior swimmer. In training he works hard and always listens to the coaches as they suggest minor adjustments to strokes , drills or actions. When racing he is focussed and continues to gain experience, skills and performance. Congratulations!

Senior Swimmer of the month (very senior!) for February is Eloise Upton. Eloise was the first recipient of this award back in April 2014, she consistently sets an example to all and is training and racing better than ever and will be at the Regionals this year.

Guide to Galas - hints and tips

Electronic Timing Display

We had a few questions at COSC meet regarding the electronic timing display.

The electronic timing is only for guidance, it only shows timing not DQs, actual results are only accurate after they have been published usually on walls around the competition pools or on the timing board after the results have been agreed by the officials.

So if no time is recorded after the swimmer touches or 0.00 appears it means the swimmer did not touch the pad hard enough to register or the system is inoperative. If a time then appears it means the manual back up has been recorded. Should it still remain 0.00 or blank the officials will then get a read out which shows all times recorded and places. Should the manual places disagree with the electronic places, the referee will ask for the time keepers time and then will sort the results from all the information obtained.
