May 2016 Newsletter

A word from our Deputy Chair - Rachel

April has been another eventful month with external Meets as well as our own Club Champs taking place over two Saturdays and Race Night in between! These were all very successful; it was great to see so many members swimming at Carterton with the team dimension adding to the competitive spirit! Race night was a fantastic social evening as well as being a great fundraiser – a  huge THANK YOU to our ‘Friends of 4SSC’ group for all their organisation and hard work to ensure its smooth running as well as for all their support in arranging the refreshments, and kit  and tombola stalls at Carterton. Also ‘thank you’ to Chris, our Gala Secretary, for his tireless efforts in ensuring that the gala ran without a hitch  and to all the parents who helped poolside.

The last Wednesday of the month also saw the launch of our first monthly fun/skills session. There will be 2 further trial sessions held on the last Wednesdays of May and June before a decision is made as to whether or not to make these sessions a permanent fixture from September. Feedback to date has been very positive; please do  let us have your comments after the next session/s to help us to decide how to best proceed.

Good luck to all our swimmers who are competing this month including our Masters swimmers racing at Gloucester and to  Rebecca, Fe, Adam and Ellie at the Regionals!

Officials and Team Managers at galas

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE consider helping when submitting your swimmer’s gala entry forms. It is repeatedly falling to the same minority group of parents to officiate and team manage when we attend Meets. Training / mentoring is available for both roles. Unfortunately a lack of offer of help at some galas is running a very real risk of putting our club entry in jeopardy – unless we can provide officials at external Meets, we risk our entry being rejected.

We are also required to provide a Coach/TM for approx every 10 swimmers.  It is getting to the stage where we may have to consider prioritising entries for swimmers whose parents do offer to help – clearly not a position we want to be in- but one we are close to having to consider. If you are able to help, and would like to know more about these roles, please do let us know. The time passes much more quickly if you are actively involved and we really do need more parents to volunteer!!

Updates from our Head Coach … Kim

April saw 33 of us compete for two days at CMK
Another successful event producing 78 PBs, 8 first time swims with 7 Golds, 8 Silvers and 19 Bronze Medals.
Three swimmers competed at the Gloucester L2 meet, Eloise Upton, Fee Darwent and Rebecca Hoadley. Some very good swims produced a collection of medals but no improvement in regional times qualifying times.
Two swimmers competed at Luton L1 Meet, Eloise Upton & Ellie Lawrence. Both swam well, Eloise had 2 PBs just missing out on Regional times and Ellie had 3 PBs & 2 First time LC swims, winning the 50 & 100 Bk events and now has four Regional times in the 14 & under age group.
Adam Nash, one of our new recruits swam at Rugby, knocking 13 seconds off his 200 Fly Pb, gaining an automatic Regional time along with 3 others in the 14 and under age group.
Rebecca Hoadley and Fee Darwent have both qualified for the 15+ Regionals in three and four events respectively.
I wish the best of luck to all four of them and the Regional Report will be produced next month.
We have also had the Club Spring Championships.
Over 70 swimmers competed and produced 245 PBs with 88 first time swims. After these great swims we have moved several swimmers into higher squads.
We don’t currently have a “Swimmer of the Meet Award” If we had and I would like to introduce it shortly, it would have gone to a very young Annabel Oliver for a really gutsy swim in the fly.
This month also saw the introduction the trial Club Skills/Fun night. An opportunity to practise different training techniques, start awards, more personal strike, turn correction, etc  as well as add some fun to swimming training . It seems the bungee is proving very popular, so much so I will introduce a prize to the gutsiest individual at the single pull and pair in the double challenge. If you don’t know what this is, you have got to be there.

Galas Update

We're now in the "quiet" season, with the last few meets entered for this season. Whilst things are quiet I am reconciling the payments for entries during the spring and must comment that a lot of people are forgetting to actually make their BACS payments, which is leaving the club temporarily funding meet entries, which must stop.

During the autumn I will be checking on payments at the close date, and will scratch entries where payment has not been made.

The new on-line entry form has been successfully introduced, with many positive comments. Some parents have asked for a confirmation or reminder of their entries, which I have done via view access to the entries spreadsheet, although this has been difficult to open for some. During the future I may trial a new system which would send you a receipt, but this would also require payment by card.

Watch out in July for details of the September Level 3 Sprints meet at Gloucester, which kicks the new season off with a bang, and was great fun last year.

A plea from our Coaching Team....

Please would parents of all swimmers in our development squads, ensure that their child has goggles that are correctly adjusted prior to the commencement of each training session. Thank you!

Swimmers of the Month

Junior Trainer of the Month for April is Ben Warner a hard working young swimmer, who has recently moved squads, and we hope to see continued improvement.

Senior Swimmer of the month for April is Freya Moody, a quality swimmer, who joined us after a break of 18 months swimming and has shown that with renewed hard effort it is possible to retain that quality.

New Members

We are delighted to welcome the following new members:
Emily Rich, Imogen Lawrence, Maisie Madderson, Orla McArdle, and Joseph Barnard.
We hope you enjoy your swimming and make lots of new friends!

Our AGM will be held on Monday 20 June at 6.45pm at Sibford School. Please make every effort to attend. Please note the change to the date originally advised.

Fun / skills sessions - last Wednesday

of each month

ALL swimmers are invited to attend these sessions as follows:

1800-1900 Academy, pre-competition & Fitness squads

1900-2030 All other squads
Girls' showers at Kingham

Would all swimmers wishing to shower / wash their hair, please do

so, and then vacate the showers to enable other swimmers to do the

same and NOT use the showers to dry and change in. Thank You.

Fundraising Updates

Race Night
For all that came to the race night, I hope you enjoyed the evening. The atmosphere was great -a lovely social event for all members and their families to share together with the club. The jacket potatoes went down well and the puddings were amazing. Thank you to you all for supporting us by buying tickets, sponsoring races, giving up time to help and not forgetting the fabulous contributions we received. Without this support such events really would not be possible; it is very much appreciated.

Club Champs
What a busy month April was on the fundraising front! We started with organising refreshments for club champs! The selection of contributions we received ranged from home made cakes and filled rolls to fruit boxes- there really was something for everyone. The tombola was a great a hit with many members returning again and again. Thank for you for all your kind donations, and for spending money over the two days supporting the club.

Bag Packing
We are calling all members and parents if available to give up some time on Saturday 21st May to come and help bag pack at the Chipping Norton Co-op, and help promote the club by handing out leaflets and talking to customers who would like to find out more. We are going to be there from 9 in the morning until 5! Watch for e-mails....

We are always looking for more 'friends' to join us! For more information or if you have any ideas for fundraising you would like to put forward for consideration  please contact
