June 2016 Newsletter

A word from our Chair - Kath

As many of you are aware, that due to personal commitments, I am stepping down as chair of 4SSC at the next AGM. As this will be my last newsletter as chair, I would therefore, like to take this opportunity to thank all the coaches, swimmers, their parents, committee members and the newly formed ‘friends’ group, for all their support over the last few years. The club continues to grow and flourish, with swimmers demonstrating their talent and enthusiasm for swimming at many competitive levels, most recently including great success at Regional level too. This is something the whole club should feel incredibly proud about.
I am very confident that the club will continue to grow over the coming years, as a direct consequence of the commitment of the coaching staff and committee. However, you don’t get rid of me that easily, the Lambs will continue to swim with, and compete for the club, and I will watch from the side-lines with pride, knowing that I have partially contributed to the growth of the club and its strong position in the greater Chipping Norton community.
Thank you.

Updates from our Head Coach … Kim

The month started with the SER Championships at Portsmouth, Rebecca Hoadley competed in 50, 100, 200 Fs & 50 Fly whilst Fee Darwent competed in 50, 100, 200 Fs, 50, 100 Bk & 200 IM. Despite some great swims, only Fee made the finals in 50 Fs, finishing 8th. Hopefully both are also aiming for the Short Course Winter Regionals.
We then took 16 swimmers to the COSC development Meet- out of 36 swims there were 26 PBs. A great result for us.
The Gloucester Masters Meet saw two of our small band of Masters,
Clive Jarvis and Sam Oliver swim in 4 & 3 events respectively. Both had good swims with Sam getting 2nd in 100 breast, 3rd in 50 breast, whilst Clive came 4th in 50 Back. Unfortunately I had entered but didn’t attend on medical advice.  Not sure my life insurance covered me.
Then followed two weekends at the K2 in Crawley with
Ellie Lawrence and Adam Nash swimming at the Junior SER Championships. Both swam really well. Adam competed in 100, 200 Breast & 100, 200 Fly, producing very good PBs in all.
Ellie competed in 50, 100, 200 Back & 50 Breast, Also producing PBs and coming 3rd in the final of the 50 Back. Great swims.
Fee Darwent competed at the Plymouth Leander National Qualifier Meet swimming 50 Fs, 50 Fly, 50 & 100 Back. Getting two LC PBs out of the four good swims.

Last week saw the second Club Skills/Fun night. This worked well for our development squads as it is an opportunity to practise different training techniques, the competitive start awards, stroke, turn and race skills, as well as add some fun to swimming training. The top squads had their time reduced so after an hour session we had a short compact fun bit. This night is still under trial and discussion.
Finally, Congratulations to

Eloise Upton & Michael Pearson  13/14 yrs
Abby Chapman & Louis Bushby  11/12 yrs
For being selected to attend the Oxon & North Bucks Development days.

Swimmers of the Month

Senior Trainer of the Month is Laura Tolley, who joined us late on but has already qualifying times for 2017 Counties; she always works hard and has her sights on Regionals 2017.
Junior Trainer of the Month is Leah Hawtin,  who is a very talented young swimmer who continues to develop. We have high hopes for her in 2017 and these can be achieved with sustained hard work and concentration.

New Members

We are delighted to welcome the following new members:
Amy Jones,  Matthew Edmonds, Ed Salmon and Jess Hester.

We hope you enjoy your swimming and make lots of new friends!

A reminder from our Coaches & Committee:

Please would all parents note that the coaches' responsibility for all swimmers ends when they leave the pool area. Therefore would all parents/carers please ensure that they are present ready to pick up their child/ren by the end of the session. If UNAVOIDABLY delayed (ie due to breaking down), please telephone the pool centre staff and ask for a message to be passed onto the coaches so that arrangements can be made to ensure your child is supervised until you arrive to collect him/her. It is NOT the responsibility of the coaches or committee members to supervise swimmers after the session has ended. Parents are also expected to be available to collect their child prior to the end of the session should the coaches need to phone and request this for any reason such as a swimmer feeling unwell etc  If this is not possible, the child concerned will be asked to change and then remain poolside until the parent arrives thus ensuring they remain under the coaches' supervision until s/he is collected. Thank you for your co-operation.

Sainsbury's Active Kids vouchers
We would be pleased to receive any Sainsbury's vouches to enable us to exchange for some new equipment - please pass to any committee member. Thank you!

Plea from Nigel.......
As a club we need more officials.Without them we will struggle to get into some galas.
Galas are getting more and more popular and are frequently over subscribed. The only way we can be sure of places at some are to be able to supply officials - something we are building a good reputation for doing.

The only set in stone commitment is to attend 3 x 2 hr courses. After attending the first one you are entitled to be poolside with a watch. You are never left alone until you are confident to do so and you have passed a timekeeping assessment. All this means is at a declared session your logged times are compared to the electronic times. You can be assessed without even knowing it.

The remaining 2 courses can be attended when it is convenient to you there is no time limit as to how long this can take.
You are not committed to doing days or sessions you don't want to do. If your son/daughter is doing only 1 session that is all you need do if at all.

Think about this ....
At Galas you arrive at the same time as normal. At some galas officials have dedicated reserved parking!
Normally after signing in, your son/daughter is off like a shot to meet up with friends and you are relegated to queuing to pay to get in where you sit in cramped stifling hot conditions where you take up the post of "bank of mum and dad" waiting for the demand of money for who knows what. As an official you scoot off to the officials' room where refreshments are laid on before swimming gets going, again during the interval when sandwiches or something hot is laid on and at the end you are rewarded with chocolate or wine.

Officiating is a lot of fun -it passes the time quickly and you get to see your child swim up close and you will make new friends.

If you think you may be even vaguely  interested please get in touch .
Nigel (Officials Coordinator)

Reminder - AGM 2016 - Change of Date
Our AGM will be held on Monday 20 June at 6.45pm at Sibford School. Please make every effort to attend. Please note the change to the date originally advised.

Summer swimming sessions

Don't forget to book your summer training sessions. This term

ends on Sunday 17 July with the new term resuming Monday 5

September. We expect these to be very popular and spaces are

available on a first come, first served basis!
Summer Party!
On Saturday 18th of June it is our summer party at Sibford which will kick off at 5pm with an open fun session in the pool and some fun team races.

This is a fun social event for all the family where there will be a BBQ , Bar, Refreshments and Tombola stall so please bring everyone along to enjoy and celebrate the year that’s gone by.

We would like to also take a new group photo so if you could bring your 4SSC swimming tops along that will be most appreciated.

Please note that the early morning training session held on Wednesdays at Moreton Fire College will unfortunately  be discontinued at the end of this term. Despite opening this session to more squads, it has failed to attract enough swimmers to make it financially viable.

Fundraising Updates

We had a successful bag packing session on the 21st of May at the Chipping Norton Co-op where we raised a fantastic £405. Thank you to all of you who were able to come and support the club by giving up your time to pack bags, bake cakes for us to sell enabling us to help raise the profile of the club.
The Friends spent a showery Sunday at the Chippy Festival promoting 4 shires. Flyers were given out and conversations had with potential new members we hope will come and join the club.

The wine and water and sweets games helped draw people in to our stand and we raised £185.

A big thanks to everyone that donated wine, sweets or jars and to those that came and helped on the day.

A huge thanks must go to Rebekah Glockling for designing and printing our new 4SSC promotional flyers and posters.  They look fantastic and will go a long way to helping us promote the club at forthcoming public events.  Posters will also be displayed on notice boards at all our training venues to encourage new swimmers to join the club.  Thanks for all your time and effort Rebekah'

We are always looking for more 'friends' to join us! For more information or if you have any ideas for fundraising you would like to put forward for consideration  please contact

and finally.......

Congratulations to Coach Heidi and her husband James who celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary in May !
