What are those skin bumps?:
|

Skin bumps....
Almost every day we are asked to check skin lumps and bumps on dogs. These three pictures show three different dogs with very similar looking lumps.
The bottom picture is a dog with a benign histiocytoma - it was removed surgically and checked by the pathologists and never recurred. These tumors are not life threatening.
The top two on the other hand, are both Mast Cell Tumors, and although the prognosis is good with early detection and surgery, they can be life threatening if left and allowed to grow and spread.
Taking a fine needle aspirate (with a needle, sucking some cells out of the tumor and putting them on a microscope slide), and getting Nicki, our pathologist, to examine them, allows us to decide on the type of tumor and the surgery or treatment required. As you can see from the pictures - it isn't possible to decide on tumor types or behaviour just by examining the lump.
As with humans, early detection of tumors is so important in achieving good outcomes.
If your dog has lumps and bumps - GET THEM CHECKED.
