Woodlawn Without Walls
Take up the Whole Armor of God
Worship during the month of June will tag along with the VBS journey our children and volunteers are taking and let the Scripture stories speak to us all. The Vacation Bible School theme is “Knights of the North Castle” and focuses on the Armor of God. This can be found in Ephesians 6:10-18. In worship, we too will take up the whole armor of God as we examine each of the pieces, how God calls us to use them and what their purpose is.
The armor of God includes 6 pieces:
  • Shoes of peace
  • Shield of Faith
  • Belt of Truth
  • Breast Plate of Righteousness
  • Helmet of Salvation
  • Sword of the Spirit
I invite you to read Ephesians 6:10-18 to prepare for this sermon series as we journey together with the Knights of the North Castle. And don’t forget there is still time to register your children for VBS or to sign up to volunteer—you won’t want to miss out on all this fun. You can register here or reach out to Jenna Roskilly, our children’s director, if you are able to volunteer!

Woodlawn Alive!
With each passing week at Woodlawn, things are looking more as they did before Covid turned our world upside down.  Last Sunday our foyer furnishings were replaced to provide places to sit and visit before and after worship.  Volunteers are also working now on plans to resume coffee service on June 20th.
These are the latest of several modifications to our Covid protocol since we returned to in-person worship 16 weeks ago.  That’s nearly a third of a year!  Over that time, we’ve made steady improvement.  Those who are fully vaccinated may now be in the church without a facemask.  Congregants seat and dismiss themselves and are encouraged to sing during worship. Adult small groups may determine their own masking and distance requirements within the covenant of their own group.  Seating capacity has been increased in worship, and transportation is once again available for those needing a ride to worship and for children and youth attending camp or youth functions.
Vacation Bible School enrollment is very promising, with 80 children signed up and more still registering. Beginning this Sunday, Pastor Lori begins a fun summer worship series featuring this year’s VBS theme. This series will provide a wonderful sneak peek as Woodlawn transforms into “North Castle” and will help Woodlawn’s children and the rest of us catch the excitement of all that is to come during VBS week.
Also, don’t forget, plans are underway for a great outdoor Red White and Blue celebration Sunday morning July 4th, including music from our choir and praise band, food and fellowship!
If you haven’t made it back to church yet, I encourage you worship with us, soon.  Or, if you came in February or March and were disappointed in the early restrictions that were in place then, I hope you will come again to see how much things have improved.
Remember, “We are Woodlawn” together!

This past weekend we had a great time at our golf tournament for camperships.  Our camperships are a great way to help our children and youth attend camp, by covering half the cost (up to $100) for all who would like to attend camp.  At our golf tournament, we raised about $2500 for these camperships!
With that in mind, we want to thank all of those people who made this possible. We had 10 teams of golfers who supported our children and youth by playing and buying additional add-ons (such as mulligans) throughout the day. Thank you to all of those golfers!
In addition to our golfers, we had several corporate sponsors. We would like to say a special thank you to each of these businesses: Mulvane Family Medical Center, Oppenheimer & Co, Eye to Eye, Five Star Mechanical, Freightliner Truck Center Companies, Stellar Home Health, and Bise’s Bakes.
Finally, we want to thank Michael Agpoon who did much of the organizing for the actual event.  Michael’s leadership and organization was vital to making this tournament a success.
We look forward to expanding on the success of this tournament for next year and hearing the stories that our children and youth bring back from camp because of the support they received from camperships!

If you haven’t been up to the church lately, I invite you to come and take a visit!  Lots of AMAZING decorations have been put up, with more to come!  My decoration team has been working so hard, and it is so neat to see what all they have done!  The kids are going to love it!

Lastly, if you are volunteering during the week of VBS, note that we will have a meeting on June 20th at 11:30am in the parlor to talk about procedures for the week.

Moment for Mission
Operation Back to School

Operation Back to School provides approximately 350 students in the Derby USD 260 school district with backpacks and supplies for the start of the new school year. In 2020 the pandemic made this mission even more challenging as we were unable to collect donated backpacks and supplies, and everything had to be purchased.
You can help Operation Back to School by either making a donation to our Moment for Mission this week or by purchasing and bringing backpacks to the church.  Please mark your gift this week "for backpacks."  Later, donations will be requested to purchase school supplies used to fill the backpacks and to provide bulk supplies for students.
This mission is a blessing to our students, congregation and our Derby community! Woodlawn would not be able to serve so many students without your ongoing support and love. Thank you for supporting our Derby students!
Giving remains critical to our church’s mission and ministry. You may mail contributions to the church at 431 S. Woodlawn Blvd. Derby, KS  67037 or

Operation St. Francis
A new ministry is beginning in Derby to help our community reunite with lost pets! This ministry seeks to provide low cost microchipping and provide information about low cost veterinary services and pet supplies.
Their first event will be an open air market for pet families to receive discounted services, products and education. It will be held outdoors at Woodlawn UMC on Saturday, June 26th from 8 am to 1 pm.  Animal Control will be on site to answer questions and provide safety tips for use during 4th of July.

Discounted and free services that day will be:
$10.00 microchipping, $10.00 nail clippings, $5 to $10.00 baths (based on size of animal), food pantry, basic exams by a vet tech and free dog training. Dog and cat rescue groups will have adoptable pets available and, there will be a blessing of the animals.  A list of all participating agencies will be available soon.
The group is also seeking donations of pet food and supplies that will be used to supplement homeless and low income residents who have pets. A donation box will be available at Woodlawn starting June 2.
Operation St. Francis - Volunteer Opportunity
Operation St. Francis is looking for volunteers to help host the first event being held at Woodlawn UMC for this new mission in Derby . Help is needed with:
  • set up
  • clean up
  • floaters for the vendors and pet parents. (similar to Winterfest but outside)
Operation St. Francis has worked hard to get close to 20 different vendors, rescues and Derby Animal Control to come out and educate and help pet parents.

College Scholarship Endowment
The Woodlawn Endowment Committee is pleased to introduce an exciting new way for you to honor that special graduate in your life with a donation to the College Scholarship Endowment Fund.  Our vision is for donations to grow the fund into a sustainable amount to produce income that would provide scholarships for future students.  The need is great for underserved students to get the postsecondary education in a college, technical school, or trade school that would profoundly improve the rest of their lives.  Your graduate’s name will be highlighted in future church newsletters and services.  You can bring or mail your donation to the church or make it online at and make sure to note “College Scholarship” and the name of the graduate you want to honor.

Janet Postier asks your continued prayers for her niece, Jennifer, who had another biopsy this week. Prayers are asked that more information comes from this biopsy to help with diagnosis and treatment.
A memorial service for Donna Brown will be held at 1pm Saturday, June 12, at First Christian Church in McPherson located at 101 S Walnut St, McPherson, KS 67460. Please keep the Brown family in your prayers as they prepare for this service.
Verla Lock asks your prayers for her granddaughter, Courtney Neff, who was admitted to the hospital June 1 with abdominal and back pain. Doctors have not yet determined what is going on with her. Prayers for pain relief, healing, and a diagnosis are asked.

Marge Eckles asks your prayers for her sister, Fern, who has stage 4 liver cancer. Hospice is with her now. She lives in Tucson, AZ. Prayers for pain relief are asked for Fern and prayers of comfort and support for Marge and her family.
Rachel Bise sent the following update on her grandpa: “We finally have results from my grandpa's biopsy. He actually has lymphoma, not lung cancer. The oncologist was surprised but said it was better news than lung cancer. This form of lymphoma is easily treated, with a 60% success rate of curing it! Grandpa will have a port surgically implanted and start chemo soon after that. He will only have 1 treatment every 3 weeks so it will give him ample time to recover from the treatment. Thank you all for the continued prayers. We greatly appreciate them!”
Jenna Roskilly asks prayers for her mom, Sheri, who fell at the golf tournament and broke her wrist in 2 places. Luckily no surgery was needed. Please lift prayers for healing.
Please lift healing prayers for Kay Layton. She was admitted to the hospital June 5 with a lung infection. She is doing better and hopes to return home in a few days.

Steve & Kim Calhoun share their JOY in a new grandson, Clayton Walter Younker, born Monday, June 7. Parents are Jessica and Brad Younker of Hays. He has had some breathing difficulties and is in the NICU at Wesley, so this is both a joy and a concern. Please lift healing prayers for baby Clayton and prayers of support for his parents & grandparents. Your prayers are appreciated.
Please lift prayers for Helen Fry who is in the hospital with her third UTI this year. Helen asks for prayers not only for healing but to find the reason for the repeated infections.

Thanks from Barbara and Don Klish for the prayers, cards, calls, flowers, pre-op visit and prayer from Lance, and delicious food and meal gift cards. Special thanks to Darlene Grover for equipment loans, visits and much helpful advice. Barbara returned home Sunday afternoon. Each day shows progress and prayers of thanks for our wonderful church and friends as well as medical care. We have been richly blessed.
Thank you note from a neighbor, Gloria Gingraux: “Dear WUMC, Want to thank each and every one of y’all for loaning me pieces of medical equipment! It has been a ‘life saver’ for sure! Your kindness & generosity is hard to beat! Thank you from the bottom of my heart and soul!”

If you, or someone you know, has a joy, a concern, or just needs prayers, send to or call the church office at 788-1507.
